major idle problem-please help!!!!

Hey guys, something weird happend today, and now my car is giving me problems. I was leaving work, and got a few miles down the road to a stop light. While waiting at the light, all of a sudden, I hear a sound like something deflating (WHOOSH) and my car dies. I crank it back up, and it runs for about 10 seconds, and then it dies again. It continues to do this and I can hear the whoosh from inside the car while I am driving. I got to a buddy's house and popped the hood. I looked at all vacuum hoses, and everything seems fine. I know the whoosh is coming from the intake side of the engine, but it is a big WHOOSH, kinda like a major intake leak or something. Would a intake leak cause my car to run about 10 seconds and die? As long as my foot is on the gas, it stays running, but as soon as I left off it dies. I rebuild this motor, and it has about 1,000 miles on it now. It was running perfect until today. The first thing that popped in my head was "oh sh*t, I blew a apex seal. I hope that is not the case. I will do a compression test tommorrow, to hopefully rule that out. BTW, I replaced all gaskets, and bolts when I put it back together. Please help, this is my main ride!!!!

I'd definently say vacuum. I don't think it would be with the intake. If it becomes detached after the filter, it's still gonna suck in air, just not clean air. Although, it would be skipping past the air flow sensor, so I'm not completely sure. Get someone to get in the car and start it while you look at the engine, and see if you can tell where the whoosh is coming from. that might help you diagnose. Really sounds like vac to me though.

as mentioned on the other board it sounds like you have a leak between the AFM and the throttle body.

Is there a way to check? Will spraying carb cleaner around that area help me find it? I've never had this problem before, so I am at a loss.

carb spray will increase the idle speed of the engine and let you know that the leak is in that general area.
