Angry Major Electrical Failure

Pulled out on the highway on the way to dinner for my B-Day. Accelerating in 3rd gear, car cut off and lost all electrical power. The only thing that works are the headlights. Had car towed home, just got back in from checking/changing Main 80A fuse. No luck. Ihave headlights and nothing else. I will need to troubleshoot tomorrow. Any ideas?

Symptoms:
1. Turn Key
2.Key in Acc: No power to anything
3. Key in run: No power to anything

Flashers and headlights work.
Have not had time/oppurtunity to check with Voltmeter
Main fuse has been replaced, no change

I bet its the main fuse. My TII did the same thing when mine bit the dust. Headlights, blinkers, brake lights still worked but not much else.

Edit: nevermind you said you changed it.

Do you have +12 at the B (black) wire feed to the ign switch.

If you do, then the switch is bad.

what about the B wire at the main fuse ?

Do you have 12 V on both sides (before and after the 80 A fuse) ?

Yes 12 V before and after the fuse.

Found the cause of the problem. The X-23 connection from the main to the engine harness had rubbed against the brake line causing it to overheat and all the plastic from the connector "flowed" into the spade connector. Now to go out and splice new ones in. JOhn

I am having the EXACT same symptoms (even to having it cut out on me while driving) If you could please tell me where the X-23 connection is I would be very much obliged! (1986 RX-7, Non-turbo normal suspension) I have had the car for about two months now and have yet to learn much. (the Haynes is useless for electrical)

Rubbing against a brake line caused it to melt? You sure something didn't short & cause it to melt after the "rubbing" chafed away enough plastic to get the spade (obviously with juice on it) to contact ground?

Kimball W: I don't know exactly which connector Bonzai's talking about, but if it's near a brake line, a good place to check would be under the master cylinder, towards & under the trailing coil assy- lots of plugs & wiring in that area...

Found it! One little piddling connection that was actually in contact with nothing. It seems that it just decided it was time to go and phhssiiitt. No more power to the ignition. I do seem to have fried the CPU though, at least the large board on it. (guages, horn, idiot lights and key buzzer have stopped working). At least I know what is wrong with THAT. Thanks again.
