MAF or AFM
Actually, there is a slight difference. AFM stands for air flow meter. MAF stands for mass air flow, and VAF stands for volumetric air flow. So all MAF's are AFM's, but not all AFM's are MAF's. We have a VAF in our cars, fyi.
Who uses the term VAF? isn't it more commonly accepted as MAP sensor?
I too was also told that an AFM and a MAF were different, but not just said differently, that there was actually a difference between the two.
If I could guess, then I would say that a FLAP type sensor would be referred to as an air flow meter, and a hot wire one would be referred to as a mass air flow sensor.
meh.

Man, so much confusion...
AFM: airflow meter, generic name for [i]any[i/] device that measures airflow. Older moving vane and sliding cone AFM's as fitted to FC's are usually just referred to as AFM's (not VFM).
MAF: mass airflow, another name for a hot-wire AFM, so-called because it directly measure the mass flow of the air passing through it rather than just its velocity.
MAP: manifold absolute pressure, the primary load measurement in speed-density EFI systems like the FD's, and also used as a secondary load sensor in cars with AFMs (like the FC).

i think this sums it up in good detail. thanks for the info NZ
