if tou have the right tools, time and money you can make anything work. like the ford explorer 8.8 is really just a bolt on if you got the right stuff.

That is a long shot. What else has mazda put in the US market that was even rear wheel drive from the 1980's on? The RX8..... I can't think of anything short of a Bseries truck.

I think he is asking cause fc's are hard to find in junk yards. So he wants something that will work. And I'm interested in this ford exporer rear end.

Not only the explorer rear end....

Copy pastes from grannys speed shop site. These are solid rears not IRS. Grannys does have a bolt in kit for these rear ends.

But if your looking for a Diff to fit in the stock NA IRS casing. there are none besides the miata...

'86-'93 Ford Mustang 8.8...
...59-1/2" flange/flange width (exact same as the '86-'91 RX-7)
...4 on 4-1/4" lug pattern, easily re-drilled to RX-7 4 or 5 on 4-1/2" pattern
...came std w/tracloc clutch style diff
...Both L&R axles are 29-1/8" long 28 spline axles
...V8's came with 2.73 or 3.08 ratios

'87-'88 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe...
...61-1/2" flange/flange width
...same housing width as '86-'93 Mustangs, but 1" longer axles to make room for ABS sensors
...4 on 4-1/2" lug pattern (same as the RX-7), easily re-drilled to RX-7 5 on 4-1/2"
...came std w/tracloc clutch style diff
...Both L&R axles are 30-1/8" long 28 spline axles
...5spd cars came with 3.55 gears, automatic cars came with 3.73
...standard w/ disc brakes

'95-'01 Explorer...
...59-1/2" flange/flange width
...5 on 4-1/2" lug pattern
...un-equal length 31 spline axles (2-3/16" pinion offset)
...std disc brakes w/ 7/16" x 11.25 rotors

for the differential ONLY, this is how it works.

84-88 rx7 NA use a clutch type

the 89-90 GTUs has a viscous type

the 1994-2005 miata has a torsen.

if you need the entire 3rd member/pumpkin assembly, you need to find an 86-88 GXL.

everything else that uses the 7" rear end either is a truck and doesn't have LSD, or is an s2000 and has bigger axles, so it won't interchange

$250 is a very steep for an unknown condition LSD. It's even slightly steep for a know condition one. Tell em to eat one and get one from the classifieds. ****, I have an LSD in my basement just collecting dust.

its an 8" ring and pinion, so its in the same family as the t2/FD/rx8, which is different from the NA's

Do the wheel spin test. Jack it up and turn a tire. If the other one goes the same way LSD. If the opposite way open diff

The 88 GTU is LSD. The 89 and 90 GTU are open. My first FC was a 88 GTU and would be my first pick for a NA FC if I was to get another one. No sunroof, manual windows, LSD, ect.

^ On a side note, some S4 GTU had sunroofs. But you are certainly correct that S4 GTUs have an LSD

S4's had a clutch type diff. make sure the clutch pack isn't worn before bothering. or if you are hard up you can mill the case and save the $700 rebuild kit on the clutch type diff's.
