Lowering Car
Alright Guys heres The story my friend has and 87 or 88 n/a and hes not plannin on keepin it forever all it has is 17" rims, intake, and exhaust... and hes wasnt to lower car but doesnt feel like buyin springs... it has stock suspension and he wants to cut the springs... so hes wondering how many coils could he cut (front and back) to drop the car so tire is right where the fenders start? i told him just to buy springs but he dont wanna listen... I know its civic style

Ok.... tell him to go out and eyeball up under the front fenders.... look at how much room there is for the tire to travel... NOT MUCH...... Now, tell him that his springs are LINEAR and where designed to function at THAT LENGTH... if he cuts the spring... he will, in essence, decrease the total force with which the spring can resist compression, so, he's going to bottom out on hard bumps because he removed part of the springs compressive force capability.
Lowering springs are either the same length, but progressive... which means that the resistive force gets greater as they compress by some exponential rate... or shorter and llinear which a higher linear rate than stock (to make up for the loss of length)
Cutting the springs is a BAD BAD IDEA

If he really is compelled to cut them, only cut about 3/4".
If he cuts any more, he won't be able to hit any bumps while turning without bending the fenders in front.
Any more than 3/4" in the rear requires camber links to keep the tread footprint flat.
(edit) It's like booze - A little is fun, any more and things go to ****.
