You're supposed to have a 180degF thermostat. The only one you should use of the stock one from Mazda, which opens at 180.

summer here in south carolina, im running no thermo, w/ an electric fan, preset at 180*, and the car hasnt seen any temps over 185. now that fall is approaching, ill be looking into a low temp thermostat, so IMO i would recommend the 180* thermo, and btw, what are u running currently?

They're wrong, which isn't surprising. If you asked tem to get you one, it would have 80degC or 180degF stamped on it. The FSM confirms this.

Why do you want a lower rated thermostat?
These things are not domestic V8's. :P

to add to my woes, i put in an Advanced Auto Parts thermo cause they were they only ones that claimed to have a *180 one, mazda was being a comlete bitch. regardless i think my thermo housing is cracked, leaks 1 drop of coolant per 10-15 seconds, on the bright side im still not even reaching anything over *185...honestly, i havent hit *170 since i put it in, weird....gauge might be bad though so what do i know.

170degF is too cold.

Go back to Mazda and ask for a thermostat set, part number 8AF1-15-171 (S4) or 8AF3-15-171 (S5).

Hey doom, Im in north cal, and had thermo go on me. Mazda didn't stock it, here tomorrow, but out of curiosity, how much? With o-ring, mine is 30. Just for giggles, say "That better include installation." Guys there are morons.
