low power after long drives or Redline at WOT

Ignition, warmup idling, everything when I first start up the car is fine, however sometimes after driving for a while or redlining the power feels bit low, cept the temperature guage hasn't gone any higher and is still at 1/2 way. I drive a 86 N/A engine's 34,000 miles cept it's 20 years old, doubt it's gone through a rebuild. So am I just imagining things or could something actually be wrong? Could the engine be overheating, cept as far as I know the temperature gauge works, just not sure how accurately.

1/4 is normal for the S4. Reportedly, the S5 guage is graduated so that 1/2 way up is normal.

I read that if the guage is graduated so that if you actually hit the overheat line, you have been running WAY too hot for way too long.

Well I added some more coolant in, was on low a bit, took it out for a quick spin, the temperature guage is still holding at 1/2 way, but mine's an S4.
