Loud Poppin Noise At 7k Or Higher

Actually I would guess it's afterburn, not backfiring. But, who knows. If it's afterburn it's caused by running rich and the exhaust heating up igniting the left over gas. Almost like detonation, but in the exhaust.
I think that's ^^^ right.

Pretty much, it's probably just the excess gas/oil burning up in the exhaust on the backfire, nothing to worry about. Now if you have smoke at any other time, then it's time to get worried.

Btw, I have a similar problem in my N/A. Took her to around 6.5 the other day (sitting there) and on the way back down there was a lot of popping. Oh well... I'll assume it's excess gas because I don't feel like thinking anything else .

Yes, rotary engines combined with an open exhaust commonly backfire, pop, or afterburn. However, you don’t have to accept it and you can stop it.
There are two major components that you need to have for your car not to backfire. #1: A properly adjusted throttle body. (Especially the Dashpot) #2: The Air Control Valve (ACV) and an Air Pump.
If you have these systems in place and your car has ‘afterburn’ then you’ll need to trouble shoot them according to the FSM. If these components have been removed like they commonly do in the name of simplicity, then you’ll need to replace them or live with the ‘popping’.

if you still have some cat left that will burn up, normally my car doesnt smoke on a backfire, but when theres a big one a puff of smoke comes out and you can smell that cat cooking.
