Loud clunk from rear right shock

I think it's my bushings or shock, but every time I go over a dip with my rear right wheel, I hear a horrible clunk sound. I'm scared to drive the car, and I plan on diagnosing when I get home today, but I'd like somewhere to start.

I wouldn't be surprised if it were bushings, which I'm getting replaced as soon as the new ones come in, or the shocks, which are next on my list, though I need other suggestions.

It happens on most dips, not bumps, so it's when the wheel goes below norm then back up to norm. It happens anywhere from 20 mph to 60 mph with no speed related changes. It doesn't happen on shifting (automatic) or due to WOT or light cruising.

Thanks

probably a bushing......

Check all the links in the rear for play as well as the DTSS....I've seen super worn ones get very sloppy and clunk (they cause that whole knuckle to bang against the retaining bolt)........but usually any loud clunk like that can be found easily - you've just gotta jack the thing up and look.

I'd bet that's the culprit, Karack. I'll go poke around. I'm guessing I should jack it up, pull the speaker off, and check it out by playing with the now freed wheel, right?

There's a rubber boot between the strut mount and the strut within the spring -- that was destroyed, so I'm hoping that was the only problem.

I'm going to assume it's the bump stop's fault, since I can't find anything else that looks out of place and drive it lightly until I can get that replaced.

Replaced rear right shock assembly (shock, upper mount, spring) with a parts car spare and now it's pefect. Was a really easy job, too. removal and installation twice only took about 3 hours, which is good considering I only own two jack stands, so I had to have the parts car supported by a scissors jack while I installed on my main car.

As far as I can tell it was either the bump stop, or the lack of a dust boot allowing crap into the shock, causing a dramatic failure.
