OH Loud "Clank"

Everytime I let out on my clutch I hear a loud metal on metal clanking sound. Checked all my sway bars to make sure one wasn't broke. The sound is comming from either the tranny or the passenger side of the car can't really pin-point the sound location.

Please help would like to get this taken care of before winter fully hits.
Thanks,
Craig

Thats what I was thinking because you can hear it(throw out bearing) when its in neutral or when clutch isn't pressed...But not completely sure.

check the split air pipe off the back of the engine to the cat.
I'm only guessing, but it could be loose and be hitting something causing that noise.

make sure you have no movement on your diff, the place where the mount breaks isnt visible but it should be floating in the front not resting on the top of the subframe and it shouldnt be able to move up at all

I have the same exact sound so I would rule out split air pipe being I have an s5 (no split air pipe). My guess would be tranny related. Same exact sound like a really loud "Clink" when letting off the clutch harder than easing. Haven't looked into it for the simple fact that it doesn't bother me much being that it happens rarely but it does happen.

And when I say "tranny related" I actually mean "clucth related". It sounds like it comes from the front not the rear and it's dependant on clutch release I guess so maybe t/o bearing isn't far off.

How are your transmission mounts?

Are you capable of dropping your transmission to replace the throwout bearing?

The S5 does have a split air pipe from the factory... Perhaps you mean you've removed yours?

Can you have a friend stand next to the car and listen for a more precise location? If it still sounds like it's coming from the clutch area.. Could be TB, fork..

S5's still have split air pipes....

Sounds like something in the bellhousing. Does it make the noise at all times? All RPM's? Engine off?

My split air pipe is removed and it only makes the noise with the engine running recently its been making the noise when taking off and shifting into second gear. It also seems no matter how easy I let out on the clutch it does it.

I could've sworn they didn't. Isn't the split air pipe the thin pipe that sends air to the main cat on S4s???

Yep, that's what it does on both. I checked the S5 FSM to make sure, and it's #1 on the Section 4A, page F1-5

The difference is that S4 cars use a little nipple off of the Split-air pipe to activate [theoretically...] the 5th/6th ports. Whereas the S5 cars use the rat's nest and the air pump to activate them.

Sounds lazy to me.

I don't really know how old your clutch is. IF it is the throwout bearing... Save up. I guess that's the best advice anyone can give you... Considering you're going to replace the whole clutch for the throwout bearing anyway.

Well then have fun with clutch/shifting problems If you don't replace the throwout bearing, then you could run into the problem of either no engagement or never disengaging. so its either don't ever shift or run your clutch down to nothing. SO you might as well change out the whole disc/plate/bearing assembly while youre at it.
