Loud BANG! Then no gears?

I was at a light and gave my NA 88 5speed a little gas and went to let off the clutch and all I heard was a bang like backfire sound. Then I was stuck at the light with no gears. No reverse or anything. The car runs fine and idles. But goes no where if in gear and makes no noise like a auto tranny that's bad. If it's the tranny, wtf made it bang like that?

I have another tranny for it, but idk if I should check something else before I pull it?

Never heard of all gears going out at the same time. Maybe clutch exploded :P

I think he'd notice the driveshaft dragging on the ground.

Lucky for you, as long as you didn't damage the e-shaft somehow, this will be a very cheap fix. NA transmissions/driveshafts for $50 all day.

Nobody wants the damn things so they go cheap.

Yea, there was no driveshaft dragging. How would I know if it's the e-shaft?

I have a tranny already that I grabbed from a 7 at the junk yard when I was there a few months ago. Idk what model it's from (s4/s5) because the whole car was stripped when I got to it. I also don't know how many miles it has. But I got it for $60, so I figured maybe it was best to grab it.

If it's not driveshaft related it's the tranny input shaft or a blown diff, I've lost both before

Thanks for the reply.

So this is more than likely fixable with a different tranny?

Cause if it was driveshaft, it would be dragging?

If you are able to actually shift it into all gears and get no movement, the clutch hub may have separated from the clutch. This moment of separation could cause a 'loud bang'.

If the transmission seems jammed up - unable to shift - you may have a broken gear. That happened in my rex a few years back. First gear broke into 3 pieces - jamming up the gear box. As I recalled, I had to replace 2 gears.

Cool. I guess from your reply and the others, I need to take out the tranny to find the problem (I was gonna do that). Even if it isn't the actually tranny, I will put the other one in anyways.

I really appreciate the replies and the help guys.

Hopefully I can get the tranny out soon and get it back on the road.

It would go into all gears while running if I pushed in the clutch. The speedometer would also rise if I had it in 1st while accelerating, it just wouldn't move. :p

UPDATE:

After tearing the rear end out, the problem ended up being a broken/snapped half shaft. I changed the whole diff and after the custom exhaust is finished, I will try it out and see.

Thanks for the tips guys.
