Lost my only key

Hey everyone. I have an '88 Turbo II. I had only one key and lost it. What should i do? I read somewhere that there is a key code on the passenger side lock. Could someone clear that up for me and tell me exactlly where it is?

Thanks

that same thing happened to me with a pulsar that i owned if you take the door panel off and remove the lock cylinder, most lock smith places will be able to cut you a key from it, i think it cost me like 80 bucks something like that

Call a locksmith, he'll cut you a new key to fit the coding in the door's lock cylinders.

FYI, coding isn't an actual "code" its the series of plates that match the profile of the key.

On my camry, i could take off the door panel on the passenger side, and look at the door lock cylinder, and it had a code on it the dealer could use to make a key out of.

The dealership has a code book with all the vin numbers and will be able to cut you a key without an original. It'll be one of those generic Ilco keys but I suppose that is the least of your worries. Proof of ownership will be required unless you drive it there, which you won't be I suppose.

That is correct, all you have to do is take your registration with the vin on it and they will cut you a new key.

Will the dealership still honor this?, I see alot of you guys saying so but i know a few months ago i tried to get a key for an older cadillac from a dealer (which believe it or not was also a mazda dealer) and i was told they only keep records for the keys i believe up to 15 years after they recommend a locksmith

Of course for all i know whoever i talked to could have been a lazy shmuck who didnt feel like doing anything.

Unless you're absolutly sure that you still have the stock locks that match the VIN, just get a locksmith to come out to you and make you a new key.

I had the same thing happen to me and I went to the dealer with the VIN and they made a key up for me in a few minutes. Went to start it and it went in and turned, but didn't come back out. Completly stuck in the igntion. After getting the ignition off and taking it to a locksmith, I compared the key he made from the lock and the key that Mazda had made. Nothing at all alike.

Safer bet to get the locksmith.

Happened to me a couple years ago. Just call a Mazda dealer to make sure they'll do it, find out what you need, etc. Go there, pick up a pair of new keys. I think you can get them the same day you ask for them.

Agreed you need to call ahead and check with your local dealership. Back in '95 when I bought my previous 7, you could pretty much drop by any Mazda dealer and they'd have the appropriate key blanks in stock and be able to look up your car by VIN. I tried this at Congressional Mazda in Rockville, MD a couple months ago and they couldn't find the key code in their computers nor did they stock the keys. They wanted $15 per key to order the blanks plus another $5 apiece to cut them.

I ended up calling Ray Crowe at Malloy Mazda who got me a real OEM Mazda key with the rubber head, imprinted with the "Mazda" logo, which he threw in free with the rest of my parts order!

Do you think they can still get 10ae keys like that?

And also kudos to mazda for being the first manufacturer to keep the key codes that long.

Nothing special about a 10th AE as it regards to keys. Dealership can take care of that car as well.
