You have options:

1.) Take your registration to the local Mazda dealership. They have a database that matches VINs to Key Codes. Prepare to show ID. Cost is under $20

2.) If they say there is no database, you must remove the passenger door handle and remove the lock cylinder. On it will be a four digit code. Bring the cylinder along with your registration. (Did you same key work in the doors, hatch, and ignition?) Cost is the same as above, except it takes a little longer and a little more work on your part.

3.) If you are unwilling to do that or the keys never matched, you need to replace the ignition lock cylinder. You can score one from a parts car. Score a matching set of lock cylinders for the doors and hatch too. Cost varies, but is probably a little more than $20... Could be up to a hundred and some.

4.) You can hire a locksmith. Cost is... Expensive...

when I have the locksmith make lost keys for me it runs me $25, I have used the trunk lock, it contains all the information to make a new set of keys, not all the tumblers have the same pins

Title + Mazda dealer = New key (I've done it)

I keep a spare in my pocket at all times just in case. I also keep a spare at home, just in case, just in case #1 happens to not work.

Wow, $25 from a lock smith?! He didn't have to come to the car I take it? My bro locked his keys in the truck of his '85 monte once ( he was actually taking me and a tire to get air put in it and locked the keys in the trunk when he closed the lid on the tire after getting said air ) and it cost him $85 to have the lock smith come out and make a key. Best part, besides me being the reason he was out in the first place, is that the key only worked that one time to unlock the trunk. After that it was no good.

I took the tumbler out for the trunk, takes about 5 minutes if that, and gave them that, they did not come to the car

the trunk lock is pretty easy to take off. If i ever lose my key id have to take the ignition out. I got my fc with 4 different keys. 1 for ignition, driver door, passenger door, and trunk. All different.

you'd be lucky to find a locksmith to do a key for $25, only if you take them the cylinder to their shop. my dad lost the key to one of my FCs and he had to pay $75 to have him make a new key. i'm just mentioning this because the people who said a locksmith made a key failed to mention that their price didn't include a house call to remove one of the cylinders.

it seems pretty obvious if I said to take out the tumbler that you have to bring it to them, they aint coming to your house for $25.

the guy can get into his car, so he can get to the trunk to take it out. If he cant manage to remove a trunk cylinder ownership of a 20 year old car is going to be painful to his wallet

no need to get defensive, i missed your post regarding removing the lock cylinder and reiterated the cost of about how much it is to have a locksmith do a housecall if he chose to and my experience with it and my dad bitchting to me about how he lost my keys and had to pay for it. for which i suppose i should have paid for it but then again i'm not the one who lives in a mansion even if it was as a favor so i think he could afford it.

Do THIS/\/\.
removing the tumbler is Five minutes TOPS.
If you want to spend MORE money then go to Mazda, and get the run around with VIN's and Bad Coffee.
Really, the tumbler is the best route.so going with that is the most sensable.
.no sense in making Mountains out of Mole Hills.

I had 3 keys cut from vin at the dealer. Cost was $0. I got hooked up that day, I guess I buy enough parts. One of them ended up bing wrong, which leads me to believe one of my cars might have been stolen and had all the lock cylinders changed.

Do you have any friends with RX-7's?
Have them try their keys. It normally works......

Registration takes 5 seconds to take out of the glovebox. My Mazda dealer has been very helpful in this regard... Although it helps that my dealer is Malloy Mazda. They've done the same procedure to my old B-Series pickup truck...

And the local Honda dealer has done the same procedure to my Passport, several Civics...
Toyota has done the same with several 1980's Camrys and my mother's 22RE pickup truck.
I'm about to do the same for my wife's Altima at the Nissan dealership.
Almost ALL dealerships will do this. The only one that was unwilling to do this was the Ford dealer for my flatbed truck. They said that I'd need to get all new cylinders.

No cylinder was needed at most of the dealers... So, indeed, why make a mountain out of a molehill.

Yeah it does, dickbutt. Remember when you started the GTUs with the Turbo key and you were wondering why it didn't fit very well...
