Looking For The Best Intake For My Car . . .

Hey everyone, I'm looking to change my stock intake. I have a 1990 Turbo II that is completely stock and mint so i'm not looking to start a chain of upgrades, just something simple that can be changed back to stock when needed. My plans for this car is to only change the intake, BOV, exhaust system, front lip, rims, then maybe suspension last.

Which company should I go with for my intake? open to all options!

Thanks

13b4me is designing one. contact him...other than that I would say go to an exhaust shop and have them weld you something up. Custom is the way to go.

i don't believe he meant a true cold air intake, most people object to cutting their car up.

Yeah i'm really looking to just change the box filter to a cone or whatever is newer these days.

So is there a company that sells everything i need to change it? or do i have to get a custom pipe made and then just buy a filter? and what is the mass air flow meter?

I've got a K&N on mine mounted to the afm then onto a custom pipe to the turbo.

heat and not enough air flowing to the filter. A true CAI involves cutting up your car so that piping can be routed for maximum airflow, and in everyone I have seen/ made on other cars work best with somekind of heat shielding. Placing a filter on the end of a turbo and MAF is like right next to the hotest part of you engine, and has no cool air going to it at all. Drop in filters are the way to go, but 13b4ma may make a kit that dosnt involve cutting up your car.

Get a cone filter with some sort of heat shield (cold air box) for it... or make the shield if you can.

My car already has a hole cut it on for an cold air intake (I didn't do it...They even cut up the brake ducting... argg.) but it's just a cone filter at the moment. Maybe I put it on piping and stick the filter down there some day...

I see what you mean, i haven't taken a detailed look so i'm assuming that having piping (which would have to be custom made?) run from the turbo up to where the current stock box is kept isn't far away enough from the turbo/engine to get cool enough air? So should I just stick with the stock set up and just change the filter to a K&N replacement?

First of all, no one has mentioned yet...that with intake and exhaust mods, you NEED to port the wastegate on you're turbo, and get fuel mods.

Moving on.

I did this partially, but never did the last part. It certainly seems like a good idea. This would be temporary, if you want it to be, until you get a nice aluminum setup.

First off all, do the Home Depot TID. One 2"-3" coupler, the 2" goes on the turbo, the 3" is for the rest of the piping. Extend the piping with a nice 45* 3" PCV pipe. 3"-3" coupler, attach AFM. The AFM's on 89+(S5) RX-7's has a 2" front...so you need another 3"-2" coupler. Put the cone filter on that side.

This next part would be if you do not have you're windshield washer in the same place..or at all...and would also not like to enlarge the hole.

Route a 3" pipe from one of the bumper cutouts up to the original windshield washer hole.

This is the part that gets iffy.

Just an idea..REDUCE this 3" pipe, with all this air coming thru it, to 1". This would increase the pressure going thru the pipe, and when routed to the filter..I'm picturing it being much more efficient then this 3" losing much of it's air around this 1" hole.

It seems like a good idea...much more work than it's worth, I mean..If you're going to do something like this, you might as well do it right the first time (a true CAI) Just an idea!

That sounds like a great idea! Thanks so much, so I can get all the piping done at a local home depot? or shop like that. and I do still have the stock windshield washer in its original place. Where can I get my wastegate ported?
