lookin into rebuild.. I think?

yesterday i was driving down the road and i noticed when i came to a stop that my temp guage was almost halfway on an 88 s4 n/a, also my idle was about 2500rpms, so i drove it home it stayed about half way, i shut it off poped the hood and seen coolant coming out of the resivour overflow. So i waited for it to cool down and did a complete flush on cooling system, radiator, waterpump, etc... put new coolant in and ran fine but smoked for a second when i started it up, it smelled like coolant in the smoke so i knew somthing was up. Do you think that my seals are shot or is there someway that when it overheated that it pushed coolent into the housing and its burning out or am i looking into a rebuild?
Thanks for any results,
Steven

Also when the thermostat is out, I noticed when I drive it hard the temp rises is that normal without a thermostat? I also checked my coolant level and it is fine and its acctually holding its color, before with the thermostat in it would get gas/oil in the coolant
please reply about the themostat, greatly appreciated
i dont know what i would do without this web site

Put a NEW Mazda thermostat back in. The thermostat on our cars is a bypass type. When the 'stat opens, it closes a bypass hole. If this hole is not closed (ie. no thermostat) then good amount of coolant will bypass the radiator.

The link I gave above is cooling system troubleshooting.

i read the link, and about the thermostat being out causes overheating situations, I think that answered my question about the themostat being out and driving it hard causes the temp. to rise, is that my definate answer?
