Little shocked

My friend and I just raced, he has a 94 mx6 with the 4 cyl. Intake full exhaust headers and a venom 400 chip. His car weighs about 2800 on the scale and is rated at 118 hp and 128 torque stock at the crank. I have a 89 GXL and he stomped me by a car or two. My old mx-3 beat him and it ran about a 15.9 so my friends mx6 runs approxamately a 16.4

So if hes beating me by a car Im guessing im at 16.7 in a stock GXL and I scaled in at 2750 wihtout me in it. Ive only added a cone filter where the stock airbox was.

My car pulls pretty hard early on but once it hits about 5k rpms it feels like it just doesnt go... High end power seems non-existent IMO. Just some more info on my car. Its in really really sharp shape and has 117k miles. The engine still looks new and runs new. Im assuming the stock exhaust is really restrictive or I possibly have some **** clogged up in the cat, which I dont doubt. But shouldnt our cars have good high-end power? I just thought I should spank him because our cars are rated at 160 at the crank correct? Just trying to get a feel for what my cars running and if its running what it should. Im guessing full exhaust and gutted cat is the best way to go for more high-end power. Does all that sound right to you guys?

The odd thing is that my GXL feels faster than my mx-3 but apparently it isnt.

from what ive read from losing power at high end it could be that all your ports arent opening but i could be wrong but then again i dont really know much about N/A's. but just get full exhaust on that and you should beat him

Check the 6-port actuators and the VDI actuator. Your car should pull the hardest above 5000 RPM.

Also a partially clogged cat will kill the top end.

I would definately put some lithium grease on the 5/6th port rods to see if theyre opening. Make sure that it's even hooked up, because when I bought my car they werent and I was confused where all my power was.

For those with series 5 N/A's, the port actuators push to open, and only under high load.

To test them, I teed in a pressure gage and blew into the tube to check at what pressure they opened.
Then I routed the tube inside with the gage on the end, and did a test drive to see when they opened.

The same method also works for the VDI..

This is how an S5 should pull to 70 with the VDI & Aux ports working. (And a duel header)

It was a short turn out, so I had to straighten it out before I nailed 1st.

With 150,000 on the tranny, I have to short shift to 2nd.
Even with synthetic gear oil, 7K will get ahead of the old syncros. So I nail 2nd at 6500 & pull to 70.

Thanks for all the help, I figured cat was my number one suspect because my top end is like non-existent. Ill do some more research on the port stuff. but any more help on that would be appreciated.

wow im dumb just looked under my hood... The cone filter that I put in yesterday wasnt connected good enough I guess... It was sitting there completely unattatched to the intake, not to mention I taped up the air pump and only left a couple of pinhole size holes so that wasnt getting enough air (I need a small filter for that). So ya, the car was sucking entirely to much air and also the pump was to covered. I have a lot more high end now. Now im gonna go spank my friend!!! thanks for the help peeps

dude you're a hardass, my car cant grab second like that. my 2nd and 3rd gear syncros grind when i shift the gear about the way you did in that video. my car accelerates exactly like that it seems (i ran a 15.5 1/4mile). i still need to get a ****** header man... how much of a gain did you get from yours?

You had the intake for the air pump blocked off (for the most part)?

I'd be surprised if your main cat is still good.
