Question Lightened Flywheel?

Has anyone bought a lightweight flywheel for thier rx7? I was thinking of putting one in but wanted to see if anyone had positive results. I would like to put one in a 91 N/A.

You might get slightly better accelleration from it. Depending on how light you go it may make it more difficult to get the car moving from a stop without reving the engine a little higher.

If you want one, go for it. But you won't see any major gains from it. You do know you'll need to get a counterweight with it right?

Hey i bought the aluminum 12 pound flywheel from racing beat. Was fairly expensive but well worth it, I also got a ClutchMasters FX200 stage2 keval clutch. Overall its not much harder to get going then stock flywheel, it is harder on hills but now the car revs up real quick and drops rpms faster, so for back to back turns it makes the car that much more fun when your down shifting and up shifting through them. I love it and wouldnt change it back ever.

I put on a liteweight flywheel and it sucked bad..take offs were terrible. no power off the line, and no pull till about 4500 rpm, and by then the race was over..I removed mine and replaced the stock one within 3 weeks.

I was getting beat by 1.5 auto civics till about 65 mph..so I hate them, but they are good for road course racing

the lightened flywheel will give u a bit more pedal/acce response, it will free up some of the rotating mass which will not give u more horsepower but will reduse the residual drag on the drivetrain and may cough up a few to the wheels.

in my experience with rotary AND piston cars I have done this to I NEVER had any problems with starting off line, or on a hill etc.. If u know how to drive a manual trans car u will be just fine.

good luck on your choice.. I personally have tried and perfer the Fidanza flywheels.

I'm sure Racing beat/act/spec/feed etc flywheels are all good to. I mean all of them are reputable companies

Make sure u get the rear counterweight out of the same series automatic trans car ( u dirve a 91 so get a rear counterweight from an 89-91 car)
I actually was thinking about getting the fidanza actually. Is 400 bucks bad? I live in Sk, Canada and sometimes are prices for parts can be a little out there.

To the OP you have an NA so make sure you buy a flywheel for the NA as the turbo flywheels are fairly different. Also what helped me decide to get the aluminum racingbeat one was well i am going to be changing it so I might as well get it done right, the steel racing beat one was 18 pounds not to far off from the stock one and i felt i dont wanna spend 400 bucks on a flywheel so close to stock might as well go all out and get the 12 pounder.

Your RX7 runs a what in the quarter mile?

Liteweight flywheels are only good for road course racing. They are useless for a daily driven car..

Since, you have this driver mod...

What is your recorded time on a quarter mile?

Actually, that's not correct.

Lightweight flywheels are also good for autocross, oval, and ralley racing too.

You can also benefit from a lighter flywheel drag racing as well, but you don't want to go too light. For drag, you usually want a bit of enertia spinning to get a better launch, and after the launch the lighter the better since drag is all about accelleration. The trick is to find one that is heavy enought to allow you a good launch but not too heavy to slow down your accelleration. Stock is probably too heavy, but a 9 pounder is probably way too light.

My 12 pound one from racingbeat is fine on launches, has nice get up in higher rpms. I use my car for a daily and i have no complaints. I also do not race auto civics or anyone really for that matter so i cannot say if you install one you will ownnn ricer boys. The rx-7 wasnt really meant for drag racing at least thats how i see it. So a flywheel thats meant for racing use on a rx-7 just seems to fit.

Still my favorite mod on the car. Once you get used to it you'll wish every car had one. Not the best for drag racing, but useful everywhere else.
