That's excellent news it wasn't engine internal.

You're the second person I've heard of that didn't have good luck doing their own turbo rebuild. Everybody I talk to says that it's hit & miss doing it yourself because most people don't have a way to balance it good enough when they're done. With the Rs the thing spins, a little out of balance will kill the bearings very quickly. I'd really be curious to hear some other home rebuild stories.

How many miles did you get out of it?

Ouch! That sucks since it sounds like you felt the rebuild went well.

i thought the turbine and shaft were balenced seperate from the cold wheel.. and the front side was balenced by itself = a balenced turbo..... yae i just knew in the back of my head that the engine was to new and to strong to be blown. i 've babied with low temps and best oil it's whole life 20k...

I haven't done it but came very close to buying a kit and trying it a while back. I was under the impression that the whole rotating assembly would have to be balanced together. I was thinking that if I marked everything good and was extremely careful about cleanliness, that it wouldn't be a big deal. Seems to make sense, but all the advice I was getting said no, so I went looking for a good used S5. My mani was horribly cracked anyway.
