Leaky Hatch??
As I was leaving for school I opened my hatch and saw that water had leaked into the back of my 86 GXL. I was looking around and the hatch seemed to seal pretty good. I lifted up the carpet and it was soaked. There was an inch of water where the jack is so I opened the plug holes and drained the water out.
I need a fix, its suppose to rain for the next week.

Bad hatch glass seal
I had the same problem with my 88 GTU. Chances are the glass to hatch seal has failed due to rust.
You can check this by pulling back the moulding on the glass and checking for any signs of rust, and also by seeing if the glass moves (check the bottom corners). You could also try running a garden hose over the hatch and seeing if any water drips in.
You'll need to take the car to a glass shop and have them remove the hatch glass and reseal it. It's about $135 job. They can grind out any rust, but I'd also paint the surfaces if you can (they just grinded it out and resealed it, it's still holding a year later).
Also remove your storage bins. Water tends to collect under the driver side bin.

Actually, more often than not the problem is due to the taillight gasket failing. Pull the drivers taillight and replace the gasket. Coat the new gasket with some silicon gasket goo to make a good seal.
DON'T replace the hatch unless you have to. Expensive job.

sorry, I don't think that the hatch or its seals is the problem, as they all get water in that little valley the seal seats in. Usually, if water is getting inside the car like you said its thos little holes on the sides. they get clogged and the water has nowhere to go. and trust me no matter how many times you replace that seal, the hatch will still get wet if those holes are plugged. The solution: take an air hose and blow em out, that easy. if you have doubts or questions try it, thrn pm me

weel it rained again last night and the dam thing leaked. I put a few towels in the car last night and when i pulled them out they were prety wet. the leak is coming from those little holes inside the hatch. last night i moved the two latches that hold the hatch down and moved them as far down as i could. it pulled the hatch very tight. O yah the hatch still make that dam creaky sound.
i gues i will try to fix it after school.

I've seen the drain tubes for the hatch get pulled up into the body of the car, so the hatch runoff drains into the car. Make sure the tubes connected to the two hatch drains are fed through the proper hole in the body and drain out to the ground.

I have already checked to see if those drain tubes are draining out of the car. i looked fron underneath and they drain fine. I even stuck my hand inside the car where they drain out and they go out the right hole. I also stuck my garden hose directly on top of the drain holes and turned up the water but it never got pluged.
