Next time its idling, pull one of the wires in the Lead coil out slowly. Is that wire arcing inside the bore of the coil assy? If not stop the engine. Then lay both sparkplug ends of the lead coil wires on the fender near the strut tower and start the car again. Do they spark from the wires to the fender?

If they don't, then stop the engine. Pull the small, two wire, white connector apart that is located on/near the LEAD coil assy. With a digital meter see if there is 12v on the black/yellow wire.

Frankly speaking, my car will run and idle with only the trail coil working and the engine does not shake at all. It will just run like a dog if I try to drive it that way though. So what I'm saying is that I think there might be a internal engine problem with your car also. Like the timing being off pretty far or a bad apex seal etc.
