KYB vs. Tokico
Hey guys,
i am up to buying some new adjustable shocks. i cant afford some coilovers, so i want to go with KYB AGX or the Tokico ones.
what are your experiances, did you have some AGX and switched over to tokico? i have no idea what the differences are.
and what springs should be used? i dont want to lower my car much.. should be driveable at all, the handling should be nice for amateur drifting and the AUTOBAHN over here (> 140mph)

I don't really know anything about the Tokico's, but I have the AGX's and I'm very happy with them. A very good bargain.
I wish I could take my FC out on the Autobahn.
In comparison, the Garden State Parkway doesn't really cut it.

I dont really know the performance difference between the two, but i found a good price on some tokicos, as for springs, i think i might go with the Tanabe GF210 springs, i think its like a 1 1/5 in. drop and they have a pretty good spring rate, you should check out their site http://www.tanabe-usa.com/springs/ hope that helps, later.

hey thanks, very interesting the GF210 springs look like they are the springs which i will get to my tokico or kyb.
to adjust the tokico i have to pull out the speakers in the back right? read something like that about it.. KYB AGX adjusting takes less than 5 minutes? how sensitive are the AGX adjustmentparts to dirt, rain, and salt ?
im afraight they will get bad because they are outside and not like the tokicos at the top adjustable.
sorry for my bad english, i dont know the right words to explain..

Yes, you have to take out the rear speakers to adjust the tokico's but thats as difficult as 8 screws.
I bought my Tokicos from ebay at a great price and I love them. http://search.stores.ebay.com/jdmwer...256112QQsofpZ0
Although soon after buying them my T.O. bearing died and then I came home from school so I really haven't driven with them much. I put Eibach springs on them. My guess is I love them so much because I was getting rid of original shocks from '86. The originals were made by Tokico.

AGX are your bargain shocks, I have them and they work well, adjusting the rear shocks isn't so bad, but it is hard to see the number without climbing all the way under the car, but I do prefer that to taking out the rear speakers every time I want to make an adjustment. Tokicos are supposed to be better than the AGX but I have no personal experience with them.
I just looked up some numbers on spring rates from the Performance Handbook, and stock the the 2nd gen (not sure if it's hard or soft suspension) came with 95/90 (front/rear). I have the Racing Beat springs (and anti-sway bars) and they are firm, I don't think I would want to go any harder on a street car, they run 140/132. You should be able to look up Tanabe numbers to see how they compare. With this setup, the car handles great, like it's on rails, and turn in is as sharp as a knife. And I haven't even put in poly bushings, DTSS eliminators, or strut tower braces.
It's up to you, I'd recommend my setup, for shocks it pretty much goes AGX < Koni < Tokico. For springs I would highly recommend Racing Beat, these guys have been developing performance hardware for RX-7s and Miatas for years and they have done their homework and know their ****.

I run KYB AGX and Tanabe GF210 springs. I'm very pleased with them, but you will be happy with almost any aftermarkter springs when coming from stock.
The reason I didn't get racing beat was because the drop wasn't low enough for me and the spring rates weren't as stiff as Tanabe.
New suspension for under $500

I am running Eibach Pro-kit springs with Tokico Illumina Shocks and it is great. the ride is comfortable and not bouncy on the straights and when turning it is nice and stiff.

I'm really intresed in the RS*R race springs, as they have an even higher spring rate than the Tanabe's, and probably the highest spring rates you can buy for the price...
something like 6kg/335 ft lbs front, 4kg/245ft lbs rear? Ballpark figure...so give those your consideration as well.
Oh, and I believe there is only a marginal difference in performance between the Tokico's and AGX's, but on ebay you can get a full set of the AGX's for $350 shipped...

Now we've gone from talking about shocks to springs
I was just about to bring up RS*R. Spring rates are 335 in the front and 224 in the rear. Drop is 1.2" in the front and 2" in the back.
Basically I didn't get Racing Beat because they weren't stiff enough and I didn't get RS*R becuase they would be too stiff for my daily driven car I hear RS*R are the closest things to coilover rates you can get.
Here's a comparison pic, Spirit Rx-7's up top on RS*R's and mine on the bottom on Tanabe GF210. Both of 15" wheels.

Convertible wheels look like any other 15" OEM BBS wheel . They are sexy, and they are light. Get 'em!
As far as the KYB vs Tokico, I went by a Miata friend's experience. For him, the KYBs were much better than Tokico's, and he does road racing. Not trying to get into "he said, she said" type stuff, but thats what I'm going by. He's never steered me wrong before.

AGX are the way to go. I've tried both, the difference isn't very noticeable since there both adjustable. But AGX are a lot cheaper than whites, and if you are willing to pay for whites pay a bit more and get Koni yellows. Whites are decent, but for the price no one really wants it. So if you want it cheap, go AGXs, if you wanna pay a bit more, get Konis. I'm sure anyone would agree with me. Hope that helps, thanks.

15" are a bit to small for my TII, and the tire prices over here for 15 are heavier than for 16". 16" should be standard over here... i would love to have some infini BBS wheels with the infini logo..

My 91 Turbo on Tanabe and AGX. Had this set up at Deals Gap this year. Was great being able to play with the shock settings when you wanted and it makes a difference if you'll use them. If you aren't going to take the time to play with them, I'd suggest just get the Tokico Blues.
