Knotchy Shifts ( Especially Into Second)

Hey all,

For some reason when I am goin at speeds 20km + it gets harder to **** into the 2nd/4th gears. It's like the gates are suddenly smaller and i gotta fit them in. It's weird.

Any ideas?

Got Redline?

Helped me A LOT.

Also noticed after the engine rebuild & new eng/tranny mounts that the shifter had to be "just right", but it was the same tranny, so???

welcome to what 9/10 14+ year old NA RX-7 transmissions are like

seriously though, there is nothing to be done other than some replacement and maintenance stuff. first off, you can replace the shifter bushings: http://www.mazdatrix.com/faq/shiftbsh.htm

next, drain the crap that is in there right now (yes, it is most likely CRAP). you may find that there is only half of what should be there. try out some good synthetic fluid. yes, Redline is prob the best, but as long as it is a good (read: expensive) synthetic gear oil, at least 75w-XX, it will do fine. one thing i have added in the past that seems to help is something like Lucas Oils Transmission Fix. it says it works for both auto and manual trannies, but it is clearly designed for high pressure automatics. in any case, this THICK THICK stuff seems to work good in really worn transmissions, and the increased viscosity is provides also helps with worn parts. wouldn't recommend it in a new manual though...

other than that, all i can say is that working manual NA transmissions can be bought for under $100, and if you really want go get a TII drivetrain...

Most people here STILL have it's original trans oil in there (shame!). Change to Redline MT-90. Don't use Amsoil gear oil. I warned you.

I had same problem, replaced the black tar of gear oil in the tranny with Nappa 90W. 2nd is way smoother to shift into now.
