Question klunk klunk at rear end

I was rotating my wheels front/rear/diagonal today and noticed something at the rears...while tightening down the rear lugs (stock lug wrench, both hands on it putting a good push on it) I heard a klunk and was like WTF because I had made sure the wheels where just right on the stems and put a few pounds of torque on them before letting the car back down. But when I really torqued them down I heard this klunk sound, it happened at both rear wheels, but not the fronts. Now that it is all tight and the car completely on the ground, if I grab a rear tire with both hands and try to rock the car side to side by the wheel, as the car starts to really tip side to side I get that same klunk sound.

Is this just the sound of the rear steer system changing the camber?

Does anybody else get the klunk sound if they shake their car by the tires?

The car seems to handle fine and launch fine too. Any ideas.

its probobly just the play in your axles or differential . does it make that sound when you drive?? cuz if its not there when you drive it could be nothing .. cuz if you get some more sounds i would look closer at it .. could be a rear bearing, or the diff. but im sure someone esle can help you better than i can

no, there is no sound while driving, and the klunk I'm talking about is fairly quiet but you know it when you hear it

The car doesn't have axles. Its F/R independent suspension.

Don't torque the lugs down so hard. They only need to be on there at like ??ft/lbs? I don't remember off the top of my head, someone correct me.

Other than that, I have no idea what it is. Its not wheel bearings if it doesn't clunk when you are driving.

look the torque i put on the lugs has nothing to do with it. The klunk can be heard while holding the tire by the top edge and rocking the car side to side

How old are your struts and springs?
It could just be movement there if you're moving the car side to side.

Hmmmmmm, I guess 14 years old since it's a 90. But they are really firm and the electronic shock adjuster system works perfectly. I don't think the bushings or anything are bad, it only has 89K on it.

Its probably just suspension movement clunk if you're pushing on the car and holding the wheel. I wouldnt worry about it if nothing seems broke, or looks misplaced.

Get under it and check different suspension points and the rear end. I know you said the car launches fine, but the rear diff mount could be wearing out and allowing the nose to slide a little and giving that klunk sound.

i keep up on the uk forums too and over there they say it deals with the rear steer. if it just clunks when its in the air then evrything is fine- but if it does it when you are moving then it is the bushings.
