Key Refitting?

I am just wondering how would I get this done? My ignition is different from my doors, would I need to buy a new ignition, door, and hatch switches? I assume this may be due to improper key cutting as I have the same problem with a 3.2tl, the key that was made refuses to open the trunk, but works fine with the doors and ignition.

So after I buy new mechanisms, where and how would I get them refitted? And does anyone know how much this would cost?

Thanks,

Carthik

I've heard that a good locksmith can redo a lock to fit a key by redoing the pin's on the inside. Call some places and see if they can do it for ya, its a place to start.

Remove the tumblers and take them to the locksmith

Or do it yourself. You remove the tumblers. Disassymble them and rearrange the locking *devices* inside to match the notches of the key.

I"ve done it but obviously forgotten the full process. Watch out for the very small spring and ballbearing if you take the thing apart yourself. Do it on a table with a cloth beneath your work.

^^ I've tried takign apart one of my locks when I got something stuck in it a while ago. Couldn't for the life of me figure out how to get the houseing itself apart?? Did you have to go in through the front?

Try this site: http://www.padandwheels.com/mr2/tails/lock.html

Memory tells me there are/is a tab on the back of the cylinder that you lift up out of the way and the cyliinder slips out. I've no old locks to look at

I had a busted door lock cylinder. I bought a used one and had it re-keyed by a locksmith. I took apart the old one and it's pretty much as described. If you play around with it long enough you'll figure out how it's done. I don't remember enough detail to give a description, but it's not too difficult.

I would just bite the bullet and pay a locksmith to do it. It would be very easy to screw up if you don't know what your doing.
