Keep killing trailing coils :(

Alright, i've got a problem on my GXL, it'll start up usually fairly easily, act's real rough and rather slow to rev, pops and just seems like it's all pissed off, well, I finally got it to act pretty smooth, but of course I've got the dreaded bouncing idle (damn TPS is set fine, one light on, all that good crap), so it'll idle smooth, bounce and chug a moment, smooth out, rev smooth, anyway, after about 5 seconds of this, pfft, my coils just bite the bucket. I can usually reset the error codes and tada my coil works again, but anybody have any ideas why it's going out? I've replaced it twice now and it continues to do so (on another note, it idles smoother when it goes out). Ahh, incase you're wondering, error code #1 shows up, and the FSM ain't helping me none.

Maybe the coil has a bad ground and fails because it arcs itself? Or perhaps one of the spark plug wires is completely grounded and once again, the coil arcs itself.

Do you need another coil? I have a spare leading and trailing coil, both tested.

I've got 4 of them sitting here, and I've tried 3 of the 4, only got one left and I'm afraid of killing it. I've replaced plug wires with brand new wires after the first one, and I've regrounded it as well after the first one went, it's strange that the car runs better when the stupid thing goes out.

How do you determine that it's out? If you're using an inductive timing light, that may be your problem. My inductive timing light hates my fc. Rarely does it ever actually work. I've even tried my mechanic's who has a higher end one...

It's either that or your ECU is cutting signal to the trailing coils.
Do you have a spare ecu?

I've tried my el-cheapo timing light from walmart (RETed's suggestion, he doesn't like my snap-on), and my nice expensive snap-on, and it's 100% dead to the world, no tach, and the ECU spits out 01 at me. And nope, like 90% of other s5 tII owners, finding the first N37X ecu was hard enough. Going to go clean all the connections, plug in #4 and pray it doesn't go out on me.

Good luck, the international sign of 'sorry, you're on your own!' Guess it's time to beat it into submission. I'm guessing my bouncing idle is due to the idle stop screw holding the idle too high, so I think i've got that down, now just to stop my coils from kicking the bucket.

That reminds me, how do you set the idle screw? I set mine two days ago, and my misfire issue seems less prominent. I don't know whether it's a fluke again, and the two are unrelated, or what but the idle stop screw wasn't even touching the stopper before i adjusted it.
