Just wired my VDI open.
I did this and i was surprised as hell. First off I dont have 6ports, actuators or pump. My VDI was closed. When me and my friends miata with JR intake exaust would race , I would catch up from behind him pretty good until higher rpms. I would seem to slow down after like 6.5 grand. It would seem to take forever to rev to 8 and was barely faster than his miata until i shift to the next gear(3) in this case and would pull faster from him. ( being lower rpms).
So i decided to wire my VDI open. First i was confused after i took off with them open. I did not tell a difference in my low end. I mean like from 1000 to 1500 were i launch in the city. So I gased it and what i can tell u is that the power curve felt a little flat after that like it wasnt as fast to eccelerate to 3500. But I mean like a small diference. So streetability as far as launching from a stop was no problem. The same. But after about 6000 rpms i was like... OH SHIIIIT... It actually put me in my seat all the way to 8000 rpms. 2nd gear reved out no problem. And it does it smoothly. I really cant wait to get headers. The extra top end that i will get seems uncomprehendible for an N/A. Since my ports arnt thier i dont get this alah sudden boom in ecceleration like most people. Its very smooth. It was actually funner to drive. I cant wait to get the racing sleeves and underpullies put on. I heard they give even better low end.

Ya.
It was easy. I did it with everything on. All i had to do is take two vac lines off to make room. I got three 5 inch zip ties. Sort of a pain but i just looped on zip tie on the rod of the VDI. Standing on the drivers side fender. So now u have a loop on the rod that u can easily push the rod down with. Now conect the two 5 inch ties together. (if u buy longer ties u dont need to do this) Then loop in under the metal vac lines underneath the VDI. Thiers like 3 welded together. Then connect it to the loop u made on the VDI. ZZZZZZIT. Pull all the lines and the rod will *** down. It was very frusterating the first few minutes because i was like... HOW THE HELL.... But just be creative.

hey
Its atatched to the middle intake under neath. It looks like an actuator. Has a rod. U will notice it if u look at the middle intake from the driver side fender.

Looking at it right now. So, the rod going down, attached to a piece that is going horizontal towards the intke. Put the wire tie on that, and pull that all down? Ok, I tried pulling on it and it won't move, nor can I get my hands in there to close the wire tie! Help!

Under the dashport that has the rod extending from it, there are 2 10mm bolts that hold the dashpot to the manifold. Remove these, and pull the dashport towards you and it will slide off. Now the little tab will turn freely.

I need a pic of this VDI thing... I bought this '86 off of a friend for $50 bucks... Now it runs 16.3 in the 1/4 at high alts with just a cone and high-flow cats. He knows nothing about cars, but he said the previous owner switched out the engine about 60k miles ago. I have a feeling it's an 89/90 year engine. I have seen this rod you guys are talking about but I don't know squat about what it does. I can push it up and down, etc, but I need illustrations to be sure I am looking at the right thing. What does VDI stand for anyways?

VDI=Variable Dynamic Intake, pretty much like VTEC except not electrical.
I dont have a picture of it, but if your running a 16.3 in the car it probably doesnt have an 89-91 engine in it because they were more powerful. look right underneath your throttle body, if there is a VDI intake then right underneath the throttle body is where you will see it. big round place in the intake manifold

remember that if you use a VDI from an '89-91 for your intake on an 86-87.5, you need to use your old fuel injectors due to the difference in impedence of the injectors. If you look at the intakes between the 2 years, they are radically different with the VDI. Since this discussion, I am probably going to use my '89 intake with the '87 injectors and keep the VDI wide open.
