It needs a cat-back... badly. What is there is totally rusted out. It also has no main cat. The precat is still there though. I guess the factory cat rusted out or clogged. I'm debating what to do there, because I really don't want to dump a lot of money in the car. I've been searching for something that looks factory (i.e. duals) but haven't found anything.

Ha! No way. I'm having way too much fun working on it.
My first car was a bone-stock, one owner '87 TII that I bought when I was 16, back in 1994. I want to get this one back to be like that car was, take it out for a couple drives and then pass it on to someone who will appreciate it. So I guess this is a little bit of me re-living my youth.
I have no idea what this car will sell for when I'm finished with it, but at this point I can't see finishing it for less than $1500... car, parts, towing, tires, etc.

agreed, there are a couple things on a stock T2 that need to go, but really like two. first one is the precat, second is the flywheel, and 3rd are maybe the shocks. other than that stock is fine.
and besides that one is too nice

imo the steel one is just about what it should have had from the factory. sorry for the thread derail!

must be because of dealing with the block-to-thermowax coolant hose? how you got that unglued from the thermowax unmolested is a mistery to me.
my solution is to add another similar hose under the thermowax, face them both to the firewall, and using three 90deg 5/16" vac elbows and two ~8" sections of hose, bring everything together. One of the elbows sits nice and high easilly accessible to pull apart.

We all could use more income
Nothing you guys have said is wrong. The pre-cat is probably going to go (assuming I can find a reasonable downpipe and main cat to put on the car) and a nice stock-looking cat-back will go on. I don't like the heavy stock flywheel either but this car got a clutch recently and I don't want to dig into the car that much. I really want to keep it as original as possible but do all the maintenance, cleaning, and refreshing that needs to be done.

pre-cat is only for cold starts... it'll pass emissions every time without it.
I imagine CA people need pre-cats for the visual inspection (they count the cats)
you could probably add a smaller race cat further down the down pipe and be fine.
CA FCs also had 2 main cats...

the CA FC's have 1 main cat, its exactly the same as the 49 state cars, we just didn't get the cold start assist...

yes it'll pass the sniffer with no precat, yes we need the precat for the visual. in CA you need to run a CARB approved cat, which is so f-ing lame i can't even begin to tell you. a "race" cat will fail the visual.
