just test drove a 91 NA...
OMFG unbelievable, the car is 9 years older than my 2000 Protege ES, but it drives like it's worth twice as much as my Protege.
Now I have experienced what I've been missing putzing around a FWD AUTOMATIC car...
well ok i don't miss all the stalling I did when I was driving the FC (manual noob too )
but damn, at 50mph it felt like 30, and at highway speed the engine just HUMs smoothly w/o ANY vibration on the steering wheel, OMFG it was ridiculous.
I am totally blown away (as well as hooked) by this car!
I have asked the owner to do a compression check for me, what numbers should I look for when he shows me the results?
If the numbers come back good, I think I will buy it
I'm really excited!!!
oh, and ALL the electronics stuff still works!!!!

and are there alternative numbers that Mazda uses to indicate compression?

I know exactly how you feel man! I was driving an 88 honda civic DX b4 this car and I was in heaven when I test drove my 88 GTU N/A.
I am soooo afraid of riding in a TII or FD for fear that I will be disappointed in my N/A and then go postal with my credit cards trying to buy mods hehehe.
Welcome to the board man!!!

the car's in really decent shape as far as I can tell, and mileage is ok for a 11 year old car (116k)
once he gets the compression test results back, then we'll talk about dealing
oh yeah, it's in that dark 'midnight blue' color, same as my Protege!

Congrats, although what everyone is saying is 100% correct: Within a few months you'll be thirsting for more power.

welcome to the group 2nd gen 7's are really terrific cars....NA/TII both offer a ton of potential for a killer street/track car with minimal mods, they still look good enough to turn heads (w/ some springs/wheels) and they are FUN to drive. Mazda had that zoom zoom **** right in '86 haha

thanks for all the welcomes!!!
back to the business at hand. the guy just emailed me back with compression numbers (did it himself I assume). He said he's got 100psi on the front rotor and 95 on the rear. Does that sound like a decent motor???
supposedly he'll also include a FSM cd-rom with the car, so that's pretty cool of him
he also said if I want the Mazda official test ($150 according to him) I'll have to pay for it.
one of the first things I tested when I checked out the car was all the electronic switches. all headlight switches work, wiper switches work, signal switch works, A/C controls had one tab broken off but still adjustable. the digital clock was intermittent, according to him.
so, what do you guys think?

I wish I was driving!
I also recently test drove a 1990 NA, 110 compression, 60,000 miles. It seemed kinda weak to me.
Once you go turbo, you never go back.
The clock is an *easy* fix. Just needs some resoldering.
Engine seems a little tired, but still has a lot of life left to it.
