just test drove a 91 NA...
OMFG unbelievable, the car is 9 years older than my 2000 Protege ES, but it drives like it's worth twice as much as my Protege.
Now I have experienced what I've been missing putzing around a FWD AUTOMATIC car... well ok i don't miss all the stalling I did when I was driving the FC :D :D (manual noob too :D ) but damn, at 50mph it felt like 30, and at highway speed the engine just HUMs smoothly w/o ANY vibration on the steering wheel, OMFG it was ridiculous. I am totally blown away (as well as hooked) by this car! I have asked the owner to do a compression check for me, what numbers should I look for when he shows me the results? If the numbers come back good, I think I will buy it :D I'm really excited!!! oh, and ALL the electronics stuff still works!!!! |
110-120 is perfect 110-100 is really good 90-100 not bad 90 below id consider keeping some extra cash around remember this is on all three apex seals so youll have 6 comp. numbers overall

His numbes are psi, which you get when you use a regular compression gauge.
Mazda has a special tester. You'll get this strange graph. It should read 6 or higher on the Mazda tester. |
hey zoom
i know how you feel only time 100 i was putzin around in a "77 ford van before i got my 86 n/A lol |
the only regret i had was that i didnt buy a t2, but i will have one soon

|
oh, and welcome to the addiction... i was bored last nite, i said, hey, look, my rx is in the garage... next thing i know i'm on an open stretch of freeway going 120, and i'm about 80 miles from home...
|
I know exactly how you feel man! I was driving an 88 honda civic DX b4 this car and I was in heaven when I test drove my 88 GTU N/A.
I am soooo afraid of riding in a TII or FD for fear that I will be disappointed in my N/A and then go postal with my credit cards trying to buy mods hehehe. Welcome to the board man!!! |
WELCOME TO MY WORLD! :D
this 11+ year old car can hang with new expensive sports car in teh track. Now go buy one and do lots of SEARCHING for all your problems (on this forum of course). HAVE FUN |
Originally posted by NRA T2 how much does the guy want for the car? cuz youcan find "good" T2's for $3000 the car's in really decent shape as far as I can tell, and mileage is ok for a 11 year old car (116k) once he gets the compression test results back, then we'll talk about dealing  oh yeah, it's in that dark 'midnight blue' color, same as my Protege! |
Originally posted by ZoomZoomH oh yeah, it's in that dark 'midnight blue' color, same as my Protege! If so that is the fastest color!! ;) :p: :) :D J/K!! |

welcome to the group :) 2nd gen 7's are really terrific cars....NA/TII both offer a ton of potential for a killer street/track car with minimal mods, they still look good enough to turn heads (w/ some springs/wheels) and they are FUN to drive. Mazda had that zoom zoom shit right in '86 haha
|
save up and get a turbo II it'll be the best thing you ever did.
|
if u buy it.. welcome to the club.. 91 blaze red n/a here... 125k and compression is solid!!!!!!! had it since 97 about a year and half ago.. ;) and thats redlining a lot too ;)
|
thanks for all the welcomes!!!
back to the business at hand. the guy just emailed me back with compression numbers (did it himself I assume). He said he's got 100psi on the front rotor and 95 on the rear. Does that sound like a decent motor???
supposedly he'll also include a FSM cd-rom with the car, so that's pretty cool of him :) he also said if I want the Mazda official test ($150 according to him) I'll have to pay for it. one of the first things I tested when I checked out the car was all the electronic switches. all headlight switches work, wiper switches work, signal switch works, A/C controls had one tab broken off but still adjustable. the digital clock was intermittent, according to him. so, what do you guys think? |
I also recently test drove a 1990 NA, 110 compression, 60,000 miles. It seemed kinda weak to me.
Once you go turbo, you never go back. The clock is an *easy* fix. Just needs some resoldering. Engine seems a little tired, but still has a lot of life left to it. |
i think you should get a turbo II how much is he asking for the N/a?
