just a stupid little trick i learned

nobody probably gives a *** about this but i found that if you unplug the 5th gear switch, it give you a little more power in 5th gear. however, gas mileage does suffer a little but not enough to fuss about.

low end? or all though out?
does gas mileage suffer only at 5th gear or all gears?
and how exactly do you do this?

the 5th switch is supposed to help gas mileage in 5th gear by using less fuel, if you unplug it, it can't do this and it gives a little more pick up in 5th gear. it's located on the tranny and it has a white plug that connects to the wiring harness on the driver side..

well pulling in 5th gear is utterly worthless i think. i would rather have the mileage for long drives. dropping down to 4th will give you the extra power you need without having to change anything.

I don't have to worry about this, my ECU is sitting in a box in a garage somewhere.

Instead of unplugging it, why not just wire in a switch?

i think this is cool mod for those who like to freeway race.i agree with josepi, wiring in a switch would be a better option.

Actually I'm sure you'll LOSE power because the car runs so rich to begin with (NA especially). The switch doesn't add or take away fuel, it is supposed to advance timing...butt dyno = wrong again

I think that dropping a switch in there would be the best of both worlds. This way if you have a way to measure it somehow you can do it multiple times without having to go in there after the runs and switch.

The two things the 5th gear switch does is dump the air from the air pump into the exhaust, and raise the timing slightly. Increasing the timimg slightly always produces more HP.

And with the air pump dumping the cats burn leaner.

By disconnecting the 5th gear switch, your cats can way over heat and clog (since the N/A runs rich at higher speeds anyway), as you are not flowing the air to the cat that you need, and you are running way retarded on the timing.

You need to get your butt dyno re-calibrated if you think that you are getting more HP in 5th gear with the switch disconnected.

I believe that the top speed is reached in 4th gear. The road and track article for my GTUs had top speed in 4th, could not be achieved in 5th.

I've actually got my 5th gear switch off at the moment because the switch wires fell off...

There is no difference (imo ... i've got no air pump so i'm not sure how that changes).

I've already got my replacement in, just gotta go jack the car up and put it on.

ps. My girlfriend just adjusted my butt dyno. She said everything looks fine.

When Kev and I were out near Rancho Seco drag racing.. in my S4.. 4th gear redlined at 122-123 MPH.. when I shifted to 5th I took it up to almost 130 before thinking.. Damn this is pretty fast and backed off. So at least with my car I could go faster in 5th than in 4th..

To the ORG poster.. Serious man.. it takes some distance to get to 122 mph.. even when driving at thunderhill I didn't get close to 4th gear redline on the front straight. Also with Mark's post brought to light.. probably isn't necerssary or the best idea

1st. the 5th gear switch puts less fuel in while CRUISING. (20-30% throttle) you can see it on an air fuel gauge as it cycles at a lower midle point.

I highly doubt it does anything fuel wise while not crusing.

i dont know if you guys are just talking about N/A cars, but my buddy had his turbo up over 160, and im pretty sure you cant do that in 4th gear. Top speed is definately in 5th!!!
-BTW- he has a j-spec s5 motor, 3 inch single exhaust, no emissions (that crazy vacuum spider is gone, no smog pump, jap motors dont have an EGR) No a/c, the coolant line no longer heats the throttle body, no extra flaps in throttle body. 720secondaries and 680 primaries and big fuel pump. I didnt know people that drove 7's cared about gas mileage

yeah my car is n/a, and i can top out higher in mph in 5th gear than in 4th gear. the comment about the cats clogging doesn't apply to my car either, because if you read the sig i have gutted cats. and i know there is probably alot of other people with gutted cats too. i CAN tell a difference in my car, and i thought some other people might be interested too. the switch idea is good, i thought about that but just not worth the effort to plug up and wire up a switch.
