Just a simple question

I am install a new cd deck to replace the old deck and are trying to buy all the wires before I begin. Can anyone kindly tell me how many plugs is there on the stereo harness for a 1990GXL/6speakers/cassette/with equalizer?

The reason I ask is because when I got to the stereo shop, they gave me a harness with 2 plugs. But from what I read here, it should have 3 plugs. Please help.

Thanks

One more question.
On my 90 GXL, I can't find the speaker amps.
Where are they?

Thanks

Uh do you have AE? If you do, then your amps are usually in the bin storage area. I THINK. not shure. Look under the dash you should find the other set there.

Your best bet is to run new sepeaker cable anyway. Or run seperates. Krell is good for that, or drop some Martin Loagan MMGs in your 3.5 openings. I dont think a reaga planet cd transport will fit in the dash though. But you could try

Stock: front amp is above pass side dash speaker. Rears are underneath the speakers. No clue for the door speakers, they may be part of the dash speaker amp.

I just ripped out all the speakers.
Found no amp on the back speakers.
Found no amp in the front.
Found no amp for the doors.
Looked at the spot you guys said but found none.

Maybe the 89+ cars don't have any amps.

Anyways, just rewired the whole car. What a PITA!
But DAMN, sound so sweet.
Got everything working.....
I'll post some pictures up soon.

BTW, would you guys build a custom box or just buy a generic box and put it in the hatch?

Thanks,
Later.

Merry Christmas and happy new year!!!

Leave the box out!

If you put a box in the back of the car then you're going to add extra weight. Subs are HEAVY! Have you seen the magnet on the back of those things? I thought the goal here is to keep the weight OFF of the car?

Hmm, that's interesting. I thought all FC's came with front dash speaker amps at least. I know rear speakers with amps were options, though.

I'm no car stereo guru, but, if you're looking for lots of bump, then you should probably go with a custom box. A generic box would probably work well, but custom deals generally look better. You could probably bulid something that kind of blends in with the interior.

A really cool place to put some subs is in the tops of the rear cargo bins. You could put the amps below one speaker, then put a CD changer under the other. That's kind of how I had planned on doing it.

If you just want a decent-sounding system, just go with some new speakers and some factory amps. I think I remember reading on an ad somewhere that the factory "premium" sound system for 86-88 was 100w max. The factory speakers are ****, but if you replace them with some quality ones, the system sounds really good. I used some Pioneer 2-way 4" speakers for the dash, and 6 1/2" 3-ways for the rears, both powered by the factory amp.

Another really slick alternative, if you're not out for max bass, is to use one of those spare-tire subs. Pioneer makes (well, used to make) a 5" ported sub, TSWX150. Although the speaker itself was small, the sound belied its small size. It's rated for 50w RMS and 150w max, so it doesn't take a whole lot of power for it to sound good. On the flip side, though, it won't exactly boom you out of your seat, and it won't take too much power.

This was how I was going to set mine up, in lieu of using the subs in the storage bins. Use the Pioneer speakers and spare-tire sub. Run factory amp in the front, off a speaker-level input converter. Run the rear preamp outs from my deck to a crossover, then to the factory rear amps for the rear speakers, and the sub channel sent to a small amp for the spare tire sub.

I know that sounds like a lot of work for a really mediocre sound system, but the stock amps are really light by comparison with most aftermarket ones. Plus, I wasn't out for a "steal-me" booming system, just one that sounded decent.
