Exclamation Just replaced Clutch, engages to early?

Well I replaced my transmission last week and had a problem with the old clutch. Today we installed a brand new clutch+pressure plate+throw out bearing. I only un-bolted the slave from the tranny, I did not touch any lines etc.

Now that the new clutch is in my pedal is absolute mush. At first it wouldn't even pop back up when I pressed it in but after 100ish pumps it is comming back up. It still feels like garbage though. We checked the fluid level and its good and there is no bubbles when I pump so it doesn't need to be bleed.

Also (I noticed this right after replacing the tranny aswell) the clutch engages like less than an inch off of the floor. If I put the car in first and slowly let the clutch out, in under an inch of movement in the pedal: the car starts to go?

I would really appreciate the help as I am trying to sell the car and I can't sell it in the condition its in.

EDIT: up until now this has been the most reliable car I have owned..... WHY NOW?!?!

I'm not sure about the pedal feel, but you can adjust where it engages. There should be instructions in the FSM or haynes manual.

I'm betting both issues, petal feel and engagement height, relate to the same problem.

First, don't assume that the clutch does not need bled. If you attempt to adjust the engagement and the line needs bled, you are just chasing your tail.
You *could* have let air into the system on the tranny replacement proceedure. You also have old fluid and there is a service interval for fluid replacement that you are probably past, so bleed and flush the system with fresh fluid. The clutch master cylinder or the slave could also have failed.

You have been all over this system and there is the possiblity that something was loosened or damaged or that air was allowed into the system.

There is a reason your clutch is not working like it formerly worked. The simplest answer is usually the right one. (begging Occum's pardon)

Remember, things like this don't just go out of adjustment. They usually wear out or are damaged.

So, first bleed the system properly. FSM/Haynes manual should have the proceedure. Check that the slave and master are working properly.

If the above doesn't work, then adjust the engagement per the FSM.
