Just picked up an 89 GXL, couple questions
So I just found and bought a nice 89 GXL with 83K miles for 1grand (well 200 so far, 800 more when he finds the title), body and interior in amazing shape.....though I messed up a fender and the front bumper just a little loading in on a trailer (easily fixable but still....erg......)
Only problems with it is is sat for about a year or two and won't start now, it does turn over when you turn the key, but does not sound like it is sparking, and you can smell gas a little when you try it, so I'm curious what suggestions you guys might have
The other problem is it is an automatic.....haha, so I was wondering, when you swap a standard transmission in there, do you need to change the ECU?
Thx and here's some pics.....still dirty, didn't have time to clean it before heading back to school out of town....it is gonna be my winter break project
The wheel on it in the garage are from my vert and I swapped em out cause I was in need of new tires....good way to not have to buy any for a while

Look in the FAQ or search for a guide for the automatic to manual conversion. No you do not need a new ECU but there are many components needed. It's been covered many times before.
As for spark the easiest way I have found to check if its sparkin is pull out a spark plug (preferably one of the lower ones) and hook the wire up to it. Lay it on the top of the throttle body, and crank the engine over. If you see spark then it works.
While you have the plug out check the plug's condition. They could just be fouled out and need replacement.
Good job BTW

well, the plan was to find a shell to swap my vert engine over into, my vert got kinda messed up a while back when I went over a curb sideways......so been looking for a new shell for a while now, but if I can have 2 running engines that would be a plus I think
the thing has new spark plugs and a new battery actually....but the car has been sitting for a year or so like I said.....for all I know the only problem is bad gas, if that is the case would I just need to replace the gas and clean the injectors?

oh yeah, and my vert has everything needed for the manual swap too......but if I was gonna need to a new ECU the next question was gonna be if the vert one would work, but glad I don't need to mess with that, thx
This winter there will probably be a nice S5 vert partout
