Just got an 86 NA RX7

Finally picked myself up an RX-7, pretty good condition.
The engine was rebuilt and such...

But there's a problem...
It idles like crap.. I've searched around the forum trying to find a cure for it.. but couldn't really find anything that was like my situation...

I can start the car no problem (the clutch doesn't even have to be in <- is this normal or was something rewired?).

It starts and goes to around 1500~2000rpm...
I've read that it should jump to above 3000rpm in order to accelerate warm up but mine doesn't seem to do this... (this also worries me...)

Anyways from 1500~2000rpm it quickly moves down, down and down and stalls...

If i give it gas and make it sit at around 2000rpm for about 10sec and release it goes down down down and chokes and such but doesn't stall...

After that the idle is crap...
It makes the car shake too (a little).. the motor itself is like moving around... as if it's misfiring or somthing?..

I can probably take a video to show what is happening...

The car itself drives alright (i've only driven it home)...

but the idle is crap or it won't idle...

Can anyone give me a hand?

Thanks,
- Shawn

Gave me the sick sinking feeling in the gut...

congratulations, you have a popped apex seal.....
I read that and it gave me a huge sinking feeling in the gut... Oh boy... Scrolled down and the feeling resided...

Hoses.. I guess I'll have to really look at it all...

Oh and is it normal to be able to start the engine without the clutch engaged?
Just wondering because I'm used to having to keep the clutch down to start my integra.

Thanks,
-Shawn

well i'm pretty new to 7's myself, i got my first one about a month and a half ago, '86 n/a also...

about the clutch, i read somewhere that the 86's woudl start without the clutch pressed but 87 and up the clutch has to be pressed... so i tried mine and sure enough the clutch doesnot have to be pressed to start... so i think it's normal

I dont' know about the other problems though..i thinkthe idle might be fixed by adjsuting the TPS.. but i'm not sure i've havn't had ot do that yet...

mine also if i start if cold it'll go up to 2500(not 3000) for a bit then it will drop down fast and stall out.. i have ot hodlit at 2500 for about 30 seconds before it will hold an idle... but i have other issues i'm tyring ot straighten out before i take that one on hehe...

good luck

Cool Thanks

Answered most of my questions, nice forum

Hehe..

Yeah I'm also dealing with a few other problems myselfs.

Took of the door panels and stuff and trying to fix the passanger side power window switch...

The window goes down but not up...
I don't think the AC works either.. actually i'm pretty sure it doesn't work... driving down the 401 when it was 33C out it only pulled in hot hot air No Fun...

I also sometimes get a constant beep beep beep noise.. only sometimes like a whole 3 times... I don't know what it is.. I read powersteering... but i don't think it is....

I think i recall moving the car and it stopped... but i'm not 100% sure...

I've only had the car... 5 days? I can't even driven it around the block yet...

the clutch thing is normal

as for the idle, check for vacuum leaks, check timing, check the throttle adjust screw on top of the TB and the TPS, make sure everything is set ok. also check the plugs and wires, if it drove ok on the way home then its a pretty good chance that the engine is in good shape, as if it had a bad apex seal it woulda had absolutely no power and you woulda had to shift at redline to pull in the next gear check to make sure the air filter and fuel filters are good and check all intake manifold bolts and intake tube bolts to make thats not the problem

Tune up, tune up, tune up! Should be the first thing anyone does when they buy a new car.

Fuel Filter.
Oil Change.
Plugs and Wires.
Belts.
Air Filter.
Check all electrical connections (some times just unplugging and plugging them back in makes a world of differenct).
Check all hoses.

filters - Gotta get on that... (Air and Fuel?)
shocks - I think i need a new suspension...
Fluids - Good

Hoses... Gonna have to get new ones and check for leaks..

Anything else I should know of?

My '88 did the same thing with the idle. It was also getting hard to brake. Turned out it was just a really loose vaccum hose down on the bottom on the passenger side. Fixed both problems once I tightened it up.

Didn't want to start a new thread since there are so many of them already.

Today I got bushings for my shifter from Madza... and no I got one BLUE busing, a Spring and a Gasket...

Now I'm totally confused looking at the Mazdatrix Bushing replacement Guide..
I realize I don't have the WHITE bushing and Spring... and I don't know how to get the BLUE Bushing on top....

The Shift boot attached to the metal plate (the one witht he three screws), I can't figure out how to remove either...

I also don't know how to remove the old oil out of the shifter thing... to put new oil in.

Could someone give me a hand or tell me what i'm doing wrong?
