Just Bought '88NA, Runs A Bit Hot, Car Has No Thermostat

I hate to come here with no post asking a bunch of questions but I just bought a '88 non turbo RX7 and its having some trouble. car has a fairly new looking water pump, and doesn't have a thermatstat in it right now, but it still gets a little hot, anyone happen to know what would cause this?

well you could try getting a tstat for starters... maybe flush the system and refill it accordingly... not expensive. If the problem persists come back and do a search on cooling problems.

Some of the experiences I have had include:

Bad T-Stat
Bad Coolant
Leaks
Bad Coolant Seal (internal)
Bad Pump
etc etc... I think it can even revolve around the oil circulation and cooling. Not sure.

the guy that had the car before me pulled the thermastat when it started getting hot on him,he thought it was stuck, as far as I can tell it doesn't have any leaks. I guess i'll try flushing it out and see what that does, I'd hate for it to be something internal.

Good cooling troubleshooting:

But first, put in a new OEM thermostat. Running no thermostat can cause the car to run abnormally hot. It's also going to hurt mileage and power.

thanks for a link, I'm going to try to pick up a thermastat today.

kinda seems like its leaking compression into the cooling system like a car with a bad head or head gasket, but since they don't have them, I don't even know where to look.

defenatly leaking compression, would a bad intake gasket cause it to leak compression into the radiator?

I had hot issues 2 years ago, I changed the Thermostat and still didnt fix the problem. When I completely flushed the system, it went away!! Put a thermo back in and flush it!! If that doesnt work then you need a new radiator. If that doesnt work then someone has overheated your car, which most of the time the motor will be toast. Hopefully thats not the case!! Take baby steps, 7's need lots of attention!!

you can resort to aaron's link or website for future questions aswell. I am in the middle of rebuilding my engine. Slowly but surely. Only because I dont have time or privacy in my neighborhood to rip the engine out.

but good luck~

got to looking and the radiator looks farily new too, I'll try flushing it out, its not really getting hot that quik, it ran for 15 mintures or longer, was taken up the road a time or 2 before it even started getting hot, but as long as its running (right after its started) I can take the cap off , and water will bubble out of the radiater, just like a car with a bad head or gasket, would that mean this motor is bad? can't find anything in that link about it, it runs great, and has plenty of power, the car will break loose and get sideways pretty easy .

thanks for everyones help, I figuered out what was wrong, pretty sure it needs coolent o rings, guess I couldn't expect much for $200

Throw it off a cliff?
