just bought a 88 N/A & want more speed!!!!!

Hello, I got a golden color rex, with magenta interior for 1 g at a local auction. I just wanna know the cheapest way to get faster. Like anything with the ecu, computer, tweaks, and anything else. I also wanna take out all the restrictors, and everything (but don't know how). I already took out the catalytic converter. lmk, thx

where do I search at? don't have any pics. The paint in the front spoiler is all cracked, but I'm gonna get a body kit. The bumper in the back needs some paint. It was in storage, only 90k on it. Also, I have another question: after driving it for about 15 mins, I can smell gas, or something. I know if I drive it for a long time, I will fall asleep, crash, and die, so I only drive it on weekdays. Any ideas what this might be?
I'm thinking exhaust leak, or gas leak some where.

The search feature is at the top right of everypage.... the best thing on this website. Search for the gas smell, as well as first mods to do. You will get some good info that way.

Good luck and happy modding

The top right of the forum page. Click the bar that says "Search". Ok, here we go. On mods:Air intake (K&N cone type, the universal one will fit, or you can spend $$$ to get an aftermarket like me and be a dumbass, but I think you need a AFM adapter plate from www.k2rd.com), racepipe (replaces all 3 catalytic converters), cat-back exhaust, street-port, start taking **** off. I have/am removed the :a/c, p/s, spare tire(if you are brave enough). That is good for starters.

Now about the fuel smell. With the car running, get out and use your nose. My rex runns rich(thank you adjusted dashpot!). Also my cats are hollowed out, so lots of stinky gas smell. If it is coming form the back, or underneath, then it is the exhaust. Probally a leak or hole. If it is coming from the engine, look at the charcoal canister. Mine stunk till I reconnected the hose going to it. Hope this helps! Keep us posted!

Well, had it explained to me that if you unscrew it a little, you can run rich. I always thought it had to do w/ the throttle cable my self, but after dinking w/ it, my throttle response did not change, but I noticed a faint gas smell. Hope I did the right thing! Who knows, I have done so much "dinking" latley, I am glad to be alive(after my little incident w/ the grounding...)

My dashpot is totally disabled...And I was under the impression it only kept the throttles from slamming shut...Reason I asked is that my car seems to run rich. But I think I know why.

Me too! That is why I have my new exhaust on order! The other night, I was racing a V6 mustang (Ha-Ha that was an a## whoopin!) I let out a nice big BANG! If I had my exhaust, flames baby, flames...! That is the good thing about the gas smell! It means if you free up the exhaust, you can make flames! Heee Fire! Cornholio!

This might sound a little strange, but I had a simular incedent with my fc about the gas smell. fortunatly, I was able to catch it but only by accident. I new mine wasn't my exhaust because I had just 1 month prior replaced the whole exhaust from the header back. Also my air fuel meter wasn't reading rich,so I ruled those two out, finally I got to looking under the hood and found that my on the primary fuel rail the pulsation damper which I again had replaced 60,000 or so miles priviously was leaking. It seems that the infamous little screw that has claimed the lives of so many fcs,had some how backed its way out and was spilling fuel all over the engine. Notice that there is a small cap that covers the damper so you half to acually take it off to see the screw. A little hint would be to get a primary fuel rail from any 89-92 model as the damper is intergrated or built into the rail, this is what I did because after having replaced two so far I figured that I would give the series 5 damper a try,it bolts rite up.This might or might not be your case but Its always a good idea to change these faulty dampers to insure your rex doesnt make a good yard piece to tell your kids about.

another problem: the idle was over 1000 rpm, like 1100 or 1200, so I adjusted it to below 1000 (750 I think). When I turn on the air it goes down to about 300 or 400 RPMs, and when I turn the AC on when the car is real hot, it dies off? But when the car is cold it doesn't die off, since the RPM's are high. anyone know what this is? I'm thinking some kinda vacuum leak. LMK, thx
