Judging intrest- True 8K HID headlight kits group buy?

First this is not a thread for selling anything, but rather to see if there is enough interest to offer a group buy on a true DOT legal HID H4 Hi/Lo beam bulb and ballast kit.

The advantage of true HID kits (as found on BMW, Newer Lexus, New Acura, some Nissan) is that the wattage is only 35 watts per bulb and there is 3 times the light output (vs. the 65 watts on a standard FC headlight). So you are cutting the load on your alternator by almost half at night using HID.

The Kit would have two true Hi/Lo beam H4 bulbs (not the fake eBay ones with a single HID for low beam and a blue halogen for high beam) all the assorted wiring and TUV/EUV/CE/DOT certified ballasts.

Pricing would go down based on the number of people intrested, but figure around $300 for 10 or less people, and drop from there. These kits normally sell for around $495. Again don't confuse them with the eBay ones that are either a single bulb that does not have Hi/lo beam switcher or the ones that add a painted halogen bulb for high beam.

And you would still need to get a set of Hella or aftermarket H4 bulb housings to mount the bulb in, if you are replacing the stock headlights. These housing typically are anywhere from $20-$50. If you already have H4 lights on your car you would not need anything else.

Reply in this thread if you are interested, and mind that if this buy does go ahead, a partial non refundable deposit may be required to guarantee your commitment if we get enough people.

What brand? 8k has crappy light output. If we have options from 4500k-6000k as well I'll probably buy a set or 2.

id be interested in a 6000k kit as well, 8000k is way to blue/purple for my taste. Also, how do the hi/lo function work. On OEM they work by a shutter system.

And I believe no aftermarket HID is legal. It can only be legal if it has an autoleveling feature so it doesnt blind other drivers. But I will probably still get these anyways

Yes, I can do 6000K (Probably be a touch cheaper-$5) and 10,000K.

Bulb colors:
Top Standard Halogen
2nd down $20 Ebay HID look bulb
3rd down 8000K HID
4th Down 10000K HID

Ballast:

Bulb:

High beam/low beam works based on light generator placement in the shield.

1 year warranty on all parts.

This is what most H4 HID Hi/Lo bulbs look like:

Not true Hi/Lo... just a painted Halogen/Xenon bulb stuck in the same housing

I'm interested, i hate the power draw from the stock lights.
If the swap is fairly straightforward i would purchase these.

I think I might be in as well for these. Also, as someone mentioned above, could you provide the housings with the kit if someone needed them? I am sure there are still a lot of people still running the stock lights. Another thing I am wondering about is the DOT legal stuff. I will be moving back to Virginia soon and the state officers like to pull you over for just about anything. Keeping that in mind do the HIDs say DOT legal on them or is a certificate included?

Maybe I missed it but what brand is it and where is it produced/constructed? Could you explain more in depth about how the high beam works? There's not actual moving parts right?

I'd be in for a set, how difficult is the swap? I ask this because I'd have to do it in the parking lot at the dorms (lowsy going to college and loosing shop space). But I'd probably pick them up anyway. Any recommendations for housings, like a part number or something that you personally prefer/think matches the housing (basically which ones do you use)?

Depending on the level of commitment, I need 10 people to get them at $300/$295 (8000K/6000K). If more commit, then the price will drop for everyone including the 10 people that commited in the first place.

H3 bulb/kits are also available as well as H4 single bulbs (no high beam ) at only $200. That too may drop as more people commit. It looks like H7 and H9 bulb kits will also be available for same price as they again have only a single bulb and no high beam function.

Some time in the next day or two I will start compiling a list and see if we have enough.

It's built in Hong Kong. The company OEMs for a couple of manufactures. I'll try and get an actual company name from the rep.

The on these H4 bulbs, the High beam works by shifting the the placement of the actual bulb in correlation to the reflector/sheild. So the wattage does not change, just the amount of light allowed around the reflector and into the housing. So yes there is a mechanical movement of the bulb.

I figure I will go back to the company with a firm commitment of an offer next week sometime and try and nail down the final price. Right now they have commited to $300 each for 10 kits of the H4 Hi/Lo and $200 for any others including the shipping to me, but have said they will lower the price further if I buy more.

I wanted to get at least 10 people willing to pop down a deposit before I go to the powers that be here on the board and ask for permission for a group buy. Then I will post and hopefully get some FD and SA owners intrested also.

I am also getting info on the reliabilty and warranty commitment they are willing to provide and will post that as soon as I get it.

Realisticly these could be in peoples hands within the next 30-40 days and if they are popular enough, I will start stocking them in my webstore with a minor mark up. Right now there is no mark up at all. What anybody that commits will pay is the same price that I can get them for... I am just trying to get anyone intrested in a good deal (and bring the price down for myself for a couple of sets) by buying a bunch.

I guess my only question is the housing.

1. what is H4 housing?
2. could I get it through you?
3. how is the installation?

I'm a newb to HID lights.....

i work at a kragen, you can get 6054 glass peices that are open on the back to fit an H4 bulb style. they are 39.99 for a pair and i was thinking about getting them and putting some silverstar H4's in them because i dont ahve 300 freaking dollars to spend on lights, but this is a damn good deal, we sell xenon kits for 549.99, this HID kit beats that.
