Judgement call

I need to make a tough decision. I have a 96 Civic hatch that i am making into my show car, but i also have an 87 t2. one has to be parked until i can pay for both. my civic gets around 30 mpg, has a nice stereo, and is starting to look nice(at least to me). i bought it for 2000 and put another 2000 into it. my t2 i bought for 500 but it runs awesome when it decides to start. to get it to run reliably i believe i need new plugs, wires, to replace vacuum hoses, and my clutch cylinder leaks so i need to stop that. i really want to have that road destroying handling that my t2 has but i like my features my civic has. would insurance on a 87 t2 be more than a 96 civic? i just got my insuranc raised too so that doesnt help much. and input would be great.

i just wanted to know if it was worth the money and time to get it back to working condition and if there would be a noticable difference in insurance rates.

I can pretty much guarantee that your insurance is going to be more on the civic. I have 2 RX7's and a Civic (wifes car) all on the same policy and the civic is like 200 dollars less for the six month policy.

The other part is just up to you. Personally I couldn't spend the money on making my civic souped up, over the RX7, but i sure would use it as my daily driver.

It's well worth getting the TII up and running. I have a 87 TII and a 98 civic hatch. My insurace is higher on the civic. I only pay $38.00 a month on my TII and like $150.00 on my civic.......and that just bare minimum. PIP and libility. I would keep the civic as a daily driver like i did and fix up the TII. You won't regrete it.

It's a little strange for me going from a gsr to a turbo II. I got 27 mpg in the gsr, and never did I wonder if the car was going to start. My tII get's about 12mpg as it is, and while it isn't completely unreliable, it still isn't something I'd trust my life on. I hate show cars, so I say rx7

FWIW a civic hatch sure would be badass for a daily.

um sorry to sound stupid, but why turn a civic into a show car, I'm sure its nice, but personally I don't think civics are very showy cars, unless its rice and then for some reason they are allowed to enter as a pity thing (he spent so much money to make a slow car slower, alright let the poor bastard in). I don't know, I was never into the show car scene I guess. I just like auto-x and backroad racing. Personally, I'd sell the civic and mod you TII, thats me though, Realistically, though get your TII fixed use it as your daily driver and do whatever you want with the civic.

i called progressive and got quotes. my civic would be 373 for 6 months and the rx7 would be 543. that pretty much decided it for me. ill still drive my rx7, but only to school to work on it and occasionally to shows and to just have fun, but until i turn 18 and my insurance goes down im screwed.
btw it may not be fast, but the stereo is loud as **** and i can still beat most of the peeps in my town.

Insurance Rates

The key issue in insurance is performance. ANYTHING with a turbo on it usually costs considerably more for insurance. We have an '87 Mazda 626 Turbo Sport an '89 Toyota Supra Turbo and a '91 RX7 NA. The RX7 is, by far, the cheapest for insurance. My wife and I are both over 50 with 0 accidents, 2 windshield claims in 12 years and we get every discount including non-smoker's. I keep an old '86 Ford Econoline Van up and running so that my 20 year old son can afford to drive his Supra Turbo. On family policies, you can show the younger driver as the primary driver on any of your vehicles, but they're allowed to drive anything in the stable.

As far as a daily driver..... Why would anyone want to drive a Civic when there's a rotary just sitting there? Letting a rotary sit is the worst thing for it. I'd drive the wheels off of it before I'd let it sit and die.

personally I don't care at all about features, like a stereo (well, AC is nice). Or comfort (like the soft suspension of a civic. And they look soooo boring. Just sell the damn thing and put your money toward the RX-7. If you need a reliable daily, buy a festiva or something.

Man, I wish I could get away with 38 bucks a month, who are you insured with. I pay 3x that and was glad to get it after hearing "We don't insure that type of automobile" over and over. I finally had to go to Allstate and pay their extortion rate - and all I have is bare minimum coverage (liability only). Insurance companies suck!

I would sell the TII and keep the show Honda. It sounds like your heart is in the Civic, not the RX-7 and things turn out better when you go with the one you really want.

There are many, many people looking for a TII project who can give it the TLC, time and $ necessary to get it going.
