I've bought from Tiger, but I would only do so if I was able to be physically there to inspect the engine. A year or so ago was the last time and the engine was an REW. It was damn near perfect inside as well as clean and in great shape. BUT, WE WENT THERE PHYSICALLY TO PICK OUT THE ENGINE.

for anyone who plans on just dropping in the engine without going through it first, i would say from this experience with tiger japanese that my answer would be a definite no.

bent split air pipe, no big deal:
bent throttle cable cam, again no big deal:
intercooler has seen better days.... again not too difficult to find a stock top mount intercooler:
Jspec smog pump is toast, USDM flow more air anyways and aren't too hard to find:
unfortunately the turbo is also damaged on the compressor wheel, hopefully no debris went into the engine and scarred up the rotors or housings. the turbo is relatively easy to repair though:
side shot of the intercooler and some dragging on the upper intake, no cracks thankfully:
and finally about a half quart of fogging oil and water in the engine. the apex seals have signs of rust on them as well as some minor rust on the rotor faces but it appears the seals and rotors aren't damaged otherwise, hopefully the rotor housings are in decent shape:
i will post more findings once i get the engine itself torn apart but so far the tiger japanese do not pick out their engines well or store them well, either or.

those pics look to be about par for the course.... but at least it has everything on it.
When we drained the Trans that came with my buddy's SR, we got about a quart of water out of it as well. From the looks of it, I would haven't been suprised if it fell off the Dock and into the Pacific before they wrapped it up and shipped it on over.
I hope you guys Luck out and get good, solid engines though.

well, the fan blades are still fairly intact so it looks to me that whatever went through the intake wasn't running on the turbo for very long and is why they yanked the engine prematurely possibly. that turbo would have been howling like a dog. and it doesn't seem like any large bits came off and had a change to scar up the internals.
the turbo compressor housing appears to be in good shape with some blasting and cleaning up, i have some S4 turbo parts such as a compressor wheel that will be a direct swap into the S5 turbo. it has no thrust play so i will simply have to check the shaft for any runout prior to reassembly if i do repair this turbo.
my thoughts are, even though this engine looks like a rust bucket i am going to take the high road and say this engine may have even less miles on it than most jspecs due to the failed turbo, meaning the internals may be better than can be expected(hopefully it had oil put in it before any water sat for any extended period of time). i say this because even though it has oxidization all over it there isn't a single spot of greasy oil leakage on the motor anywhere, meaning to me it seems like a very low mile motor. i can just hope that the water did not damage the chrome surfaces or have any chrome flaking which would expedite the sleeve rusting process.
but this is all just guesswork until i pull apart the engine early next week.
i actually have a good amount of faith that the core block is in decent condition though, but it definitely isn't a plug'n'play box. it did obviously have a boost controller on it which is where my only reservations lie. the stock line to the wastegate was bypassed and capped is how i know.

I had Kevin Landers of Rotary Resurrection rebuild/port/ and balance my 13B-NA. He did an awesome job. I'm saving up for him to do a full-bridge port for it next.

For the record, my engine and trans from Japan2LA were beautiful. There may have been one bad dealing with him, but there have been a heck of a lot more great dealings with him.
Subscribed to this thread and I sure hope the internals are impeccable for you OP.
