I have no experience with this, BUT I know what you are going to hear.

1) Search. There are COUNTLESS horror stories on this forum regarding JDM engines.

2) As far as I know, no JDM engine seller offers any sort of warranty on them. What you receive is a pure crap shoot. You may get lucky, you may get the shaft. Who knows.

TigerJDM has a horrible reputation here. I've heard very mixed, with a bias towards bad, stories from JspecAuto.

No sir. I'd say it'd be basically the same from any of them. All of the engines are sourced the same way, and probably from the same places.

If they offer a warranty, they might be a decent seller.

A while back... Before I knew about a reputable dealer such as Japan2LA... I went with some no name company. I believe the name was "Fast and Furious Japanese Motors" or some bullshit like that. I'm pretty sure they don't even exist anymore. (I did very little research when I bought an engine.) - I payed $1,500 to this JDM engine importer located in Canada. When I received my JDM 13BT, I knew nothing about compression tests... Didn't even know of their existence. :-/ So, I installed it. It wouldn't run... Come to find out, the rear rotor was blown. I spent another $2,000 or so, give or take, on a rebuild from Rotary Resurrection. The engine runs great! Had I done my research at that time, I would have been able to build my own...

I learned my lesson dealing with places like that. Never again. I spent wayyyy too much on JUST the engine.

Contact the user on here Japan2LA. If he's got what you need in stock, he will hook you up with a good motor. I don't know if I've really read anything bad on here about motors he's sold. All those JDM engine places in Canada suck, don't waste your money.

Long story short, after 6 months of owning the car a near exploding rotary I went through all my options and I took a gamble buying one off ebay. When I got it I mixed match some parts from the old engine onto the jdm, and a lot of parts from the jdm engine were in sooooo much better condition. The transmission was super strong, felt so much better than my old slippy/grindy one. As the engine itself...seeing it for the first time I was actually very suprised how good the exterior looked. Totally was above my expectations for a used jdm engine. Granted that doesnt mean much as the insides are what matters the most (seals/rotors/housing). After a long journey of prepping and swapping in my very first engine ever I started it...WOW! The smoke it shat you would not ever believe! It cranked, started, pooped white smoke, and that was it. Didnt idle at all and I was completely disappointed. Then I had to go to work and started it later that night. Hey it works now! Since then I've just been working out the kinks and currently have it running good enough for a daily driver. Compression is good, doesnt burn tons of oil and coolant like my old 170k engine, it boost like a mother f*****. Holy crap this thing is fast!

Its honestly a gamble with terrible odds against you. You read/hear horror stories all the time, but I guess I just got lucky..lol! Cant say you'd have the same luck though .

I had got a 20b from tiger Japan at some point a few years ago and when I took it apart I wish I hadn't it was so clean that I could have just put it in and drove away but instead decided to port it and all....now I'm paying the money to rebuild and everything its always better to be safe than sorry

I have ordered 5 Jspecs total, and purchased 3 others from other people that have ordered from unknown importers..

3 of the 5 I ordered were bad for various reasons.. (all from OSAKAJDM- i think they are the same company as tigerjapaneese)

The 3 I have bought from individuals were better than good (but dont know who they bought them from).

3 out of 8 were bad but rebuildable. The other 5 are still on the road.. It's a crap shoot, but I would reccomend buying one as cheap as possible (i paid like $860 shipped for all mine with engine and transmission) and plan on a rebuild.. Also know that several of them were sent to me as the incorrect series motor so there was some additional cost to make them work cross series.

I picked up an engine from JDM Engine Depot. They let me go through their inventory of 13BTs I picked a nice one off the shelf they took it down for me and let me take a look at it myself. I checked for rust in the housings there was none, checked the compression was decent for a used engine, no cracks or obvious leaks from the engine or trans. It even came with a few nice jdm goodies. I'm still in the process of installing it now so I haven't had the car running with it yet. Only bad thing was they don't have warranties on the engines (not sure if its just rotary or all engines they sell).

My advice would be to go somewhere local where they'll let you check out what you're buying.

As for rotary engines, I can't offer much insight. However, I have ordered a 1jz before for my old Cressida project. I dealt specifically with JDMSource.ca

They were very helpful, shipping was reasonable to Hawaii (used to live there)! Gave compression videos, numerous pictures of the exact motor set, and they offer a warranty. I can't remember the exact length of said warranty but it is on their site.

I also had a friend order an SR20 from them. It had a bad turbo and they replaced it.

Just my 2 cents.

I've been running a jspec in my FC for 4 years now. I hand picked one from tiger japanese, they had 8 TII engines with transmissions, 7 were blown in some way. I brought home the good one, other than an annoying oil leak around the rear dowel pin the engine has been great.

If you are planning on buying a jspec, find a seller near you and test it your self. Those tiger jokers told me "you can't test rotary engines". These guys do not have your best interests in mind, they just want to make money.
