I've got 5 lugs. I want 4pot brakes.

(i searched and surprisingly didn't find much)

Just like all the S5 GTU's, mine has the 5 lugs, but is lacking the front 4 pot calipers.

So what am I supposed to have to do this? I'm guessing new pads, the 4pot calipers, different front brake lines. I did some research and it looks like they share the same master cylinder and rotors. What else will I need?

Also, the cars that came with the 4pot had different rear rotors. I think they had solid where us 1pot people have vented. Which is better and do I need to do anything to swap to the better rear rotors?

Thanks.

how do i know if i have the 2pot or 4pot front brakes?

i'm assuming 4pot cause i have the big enclosed front calipers and the open-style rear calipers. i checked out mark's "what does my car come with" sticky with all the options and such, but it said 4pot brakes were an option on 91's

i have a 91 GXL.

You could probably keep the rear solid rotors, and just do the front with the 4 pot calipers.

You would need the calipers, a bunch of good brake fluid (I like Castrol LMA), different lines.

You may also need new hubs, but since I have not done the swap on a S5 I couldn't say for sure.

I'm pretty sure you have the 4pot brakes. If I'm not mistaken, the only s5 that had the single piston calipers was the GTU.

So there is no benefit from going to the other type of rear rotor?

I'll look into the hub issue.

I can't seem to find anything that would suggest that I'd need anything more than what was listed previously.

Whats the thing called that the caliper bolts up to? Wouldn't I need the one that the 4pot caliper uses?

I though they only made 1 piston or 4 piston brakes!

I though they only made 1 piston or 4 piston brakes! But if i am wrong you could always take your caliper off and find out. I mean thats like a 15 min job. Does any one know if they make big brake kits for the rears of the second gen??

I thought the rear brakes are only for e-brake? Hence they wouldn't be used with the brake pedal.

huh??

The rear brake take care of some of the braking. But since the e-brake unit is in the back so i guess no one makes a kit it than.

i've done the front brake swap from 1 piston to the 4 pistons, here's what i needed:

calipers, pads, hard lines. you don't need new rotors, but you should get them resurfaced since you'll be putting in new pads. also, the 4 pot brakes do not have a carrier (the hinge/frame thingy the 1 piston brakes have). the 4pots bolt right up to where the old carrier goes.

i'd recomend getting some new soft lines while you're monkeying down there.

everything is plug and play. took me about 3 hours to do. most of the time was getting those damn screws out of the rotors and waiting for the rotors to get resurfaced.

it's hard to say how much of an improvement i got since i upgraded to ebc greenstuff pads at the same time, but i can say that i am happy with the overall effect. very good bite when you have to slow down in a hurry on the highway. i didn't notice that much difference cruising around town.

how much do junkyards usually charge for the two calipers themselves, not the rebuil kits?

i would look for someone parting a s4 rx7 all the 5 lug versions have the 4 piston front brakes, so you could look that way or even some one parting a s5 that has the 4 piston brakes, once you get them buy some hawk hp+ brake pads I have them on my 7 and they rock. lates matt22

All the GXL's had 4pots. They're finned aluminum (nice because they resist rusting), and Mazda lettering is raised off the caliper.
