That's all kind of circumstantial and depends on the car you're going to be making a decision on. Find the car you want, list its pros, cons, and price, and then I think we can help you out a bit better.

Exactly, you can find a car for abotu $5000 in good condition with a brand new motor in it, or with a few thousand miles on it. However, if you do that, be sure that the cosmetics on the car are perfect too. I'm also looking for a TII (10ae) and most cars I find are perfect mechanically, but cosmetically are reasonably bad. It all depends what you want really. It also depends on if you want to mod the car or not.

For 5 grand you should be able to get a very good condition, low mileage S5 TII. (89-91). Don't even think about spending that much on an S4. They shouldn't sell for more than 4 grand unless they are almost brand new, never driven. Have fun finding a good car. They are few and far between...

God if that isnt ever the truth, especially an S5TII. People either dont want to get off of them or they want a big chunk of change (like 6G US). You CAN though, find some sitting in the yard and things for like well under a grand and then put a rebuilt engine in them. That to me is the way to go. While you have the engine out you can put a good SP on it and do a few mods here and there and clean it up real nice. Good luck my man.

Incase you wondering I have about $7,000 in mods and parts that I havent put on yet. The best time before it blew up was a 13.8@101mph (clutch slipping all the way down the track). It has all new Falken 245/45 FK451's all the way around. Oh and I paid $10,000 for it stock when I bought it last year in March.

$10000? That seems like a very large amount. I hope it was in pristine condition with low low low mileage.
