intercooler piping sizes

ok so im bout to get some universal piping but i dont know what size to get, my fmic's outlet/inlet is 3" but my turbo's pipe connector part(whatever its called) is only 2.75 i know i can get couplers to adjust the size to fit on the turbo etc but im wondering if getting diff size pipes makes that big of a difference besides turbo lag and how long it takes to fill the pipes etc, is there any other difference?

my Greddy 3 row kit (which is a big core) has 2.25" on the side of the core coming from the turbo, and 2.75" on the side that goes to the engine.

it's weird, my Greddy core is the same on both sides (the endtanks) but the piping is different sized, with a reducer. Maybe Greddy uses the same core on multiple cars. I can see that core going on a Mk IV Supra, it's pretty dang big:

I would judge it on the size of the opening for the piece attatched to the throttle body. There are plenty of transition hoses and bends to make intercooler piping without welding. it would be nice to have a bead for the clamps
