intake removal

Ok, I'm about to remove my six ports this weekend, so the entire intake is coming off... I have a haynes manual, and am pretty confident that I can do this w/out a problem, but I'm sure theres a couple little tricks to doing this not mentioned in the manual. Just a few hints/how-to's/how not to do's, anything would be appreciated.

Take off the entire upper intake first, a a whole. You only have to disconnect a few things, like 5 12mm bolts on one end, and like 2 on the other, and the whole thing lifts off as one piece. You can leave alot connected. Just disconnect all the bolts, then try and lift it, and check each time to see what holds it on, lift slowly each time. You can get it off in 20-30 minutes.

The lower manifold is a bit more fun, but not hard. I think 6 bolts underneath take it off. There are some vacuum lines and oil injector lines(be VERY careful with these, they break EASILY!!!). I usually use vice grips on the upper part of the oil injector, its hard to find a wrench thin enough to fit well onto the hex part of the oil injector. Dont lose the copper rings that go above and below each oil injector.

Are you removeing your 6 ports? OR just cleaning them? IF you reinstall be sure to oil the sleeves well. Be sure you put them in the right direction as well, and align them to the adjustment shafts on the lower manifold when putting it back on. IF youre disabling them, dont worry about it.

IF you have any questions or problems email me hypntyz@hotmail.com

I'm doing the exact same thing.. Take a look at some of my new posts about removing the 6p control rods and injector splash guard and stuff.. Hopefully, we'll get some posts on this.. I'll try to do a full writeup about it after I get it done with pictures.

On the oil injectors, get your Makita grinder out and take it to the 14mm wrench. Thin it down to fit the injector. You are now a certified Tool Maker! Lotsa cheap tools to gring down at Pep Boys if you do not want to trash a Craftsman etc. wrench. Just a thought. Also if you take the upper manifold off doing something, be sure to put some type of plug in the open holes in the lower manifold. The open holes attract objects that do not belong in an intake.

Thanks guys, ordered up the gaskets from mazda today, along with a new thermostat... this is going to be my weekend project, hopefully it doesnt take any longer. the oil injecters cant be removed with a socket or something? Maybe a socket with a cutout in it, like an 02 sensor one? I don't know, i'm sure i'll see what you mean when i get the upper intake off. Tesla, i'm about to look for your post now...

Not to sound like an idiot, but what the hell does the egr do, anyway? What are some things that will suffer from taking it out, and are there any gains? Thanks max!

it re-circulates the exhaust gases, and the valve tends to go bad causing poor fuel efficiency.

So no cats, no air pump, no need for egr.

con, idle(if not done correct)
pro, one less thing to worry about.

Yeah, but recirculates them to where? Also, I still have my air pump, and brand new cats.... I'd like them to last as long as possible, would a lack of egr valve change anything?

oh, my bad, I thought you were also installing a header.

Maybe somebody knows for sure, the block off plate is like $5.
