Intake Mod Question

Im planning to put a cold air intake system in my car but im not sure what to do with the airflow sensor and the tube that connects to the air pump ( i think thats what it is). I know tons of you guys have done this and i would appreciate the help since im new to this stuff. Should i just drill a hole in the new piping to put the sensor in? or should i disconnect it? And what do i do about the clean air that needs to go to the air pump? could i just a smaller filter on it or do i need to connect it to the main intake pipe? thanks in advance.

You can put a breather (small filter) on the air pump intake.

you cannot bypass the afm- so it will have to be in line, the breather will work on the pump like trianwreck said...

I have an 89, so basically the same airbox. I just put a cone filter on it, and bolted it down hella tight. for the air pump just punch a nipple into the intake line after cone. I tried a couple different, store bought pieces, but they all sucked.. this seemed to work the best for me.

Where is the intake restriction on the stock system? From what I can see, it's the tubing before the air filter. I was wondering if it makes sense to just fit some kind of mesh screen over the stock filter to hold it in. Would that do the same thing as a K&N setup?

yeah i agree. the fresh air duct is highly restrictive and the two 90 deg. angles the air has to go through before it gets to the engine doesnt help either.

When you remove the airbox from the airflow meter you'll see the airflow meter inlet has a 2.5" OD neck. Simply by a pod filter with the right size neck (K&N is good) and clamp it on.

Note that this is not a cold air intake, it's simply a filter. A true cold air intake ensures only cold air from outside gets to the filter, and not the hot engine bay air. A heat shield and a cold air duct are required to make this a true cold air intake, and will make this mod far more effective.

exactly like what NZ said, try to stay away form just "bolt on" air filters because you'll most likely lose some power from the hot air. It sounds pretty though lol but yeah if you do that then make sure you have some type of cold air box to enclose the filter or a heat shield, if you do any crazy duct work be sure to include pictures too

im planning to use the apex'i power intake in my car. i also plan to wrap the pipe with insulation and make a heat shield around the filter. maybe ill do some ducting later on, but ill have to think more about it first. my question is what kind of pipe should i use? it would have to fit on apexi's filter and it also has to have a hole for the air flow sensor. some of my buddies have done custom stuff (but they have supras, and MR2's) but it costs more. they said to look into Greddy and HKS. any suggestions? thanks.

oh yeah. it would be nice if it was polished on the inside too. but does it even make a noticabe difference with airflow or is it just a waste of money? and what about ducting? does that really help to?

ok. i just called the guys at rx7trix.com and they said that there are no aftermarket pipes that fit. its hard to believe, but he said that custom is the only way that you'll get it done.

check out 1987rx7guy he's got intakes for the NA and turbo....don't know how good they are but he's done all kinds of testing on them, i guess they are like $200 or so....worth looking at.

His cold air system doesn't include a bypass. So make sure to pick up an additional water bypass available at any local rice shop.

Honestly, the restriction in the stock system is the airbox. Remove it, and build a nice cold air box...
