What's your intent in replacing the intake? If it's more power, don't kid yourself. Better air flow through the engine is an admirable goal, but the first and best thing you can do is get a good catback exhaust system and presilencer installed. The stock air intake works just fine (IMHO).

The stock system is very restrictive, after all, where is it trying to suck air from? Through the hood thats damn near pressed against it? A cone filter (even a cheapy from autozone) will let you see a difference.
Another good one is to port the UIM and LIM, there's a tread containing it somewhere around here.
--edit--
An after thought. Instead of buying an adapter plate for the cone air filter, see if you can find an MAF for a mazda 939, I'm pretty sure thier compatible, and the 939 has a 3" inlet and outlet.

and the stock intake is well thought up system, and is not restrictive, it pulls up plenty of cold air from under that gap in the hood, there can be better systems if a very good complete setup is made, but there is nothing wrong with the stock setup

Yes, I meant 929. I'm just retarded sometimes.
And you mean to tell me that that small gap between the hood and the stock intake assembly that is directly above the radiator, would provide the same flow and cooler temps than a cone filter?
I'm just speaking from my personal experience, I noticed stronger pulls that lasted higher in the rpm range after I ditched that restrictive stock intake.
