Intake Gasket

Can anyone enlighten me on how difficult it would be to replace a intake gasket? i just got my egr replaced by the shop and they didnt charge me cus im friends with the owners daughter but now they say i need a new intake gasket cus its leaking like a champ and they wanna charge me about $375, and im wondering how much work this would be to do with me and a few of my friends that are knowledgable with cars because i really don't want to shell out that much money to get a $7 dollar gasket replaced. I also think its party of my boost problem too on my turbo because my turbo is basically new and its not boosting. SOME ONE PLEASE HELP

If you'd like to perform a temp repair that may actually remain permanent, and you know exactly where the leak is (and can easily access it), start her up, get some black RTV on your finger, and place it over the leak. Immediately (within a couple of seconds) shut the car off, and let the RTV cure for at least 15 minutes.

Your leak should now be fixed, and might last a while, depending on how much relative movement there is between the mating surfaces...

Or the other answer- it's not THAT hard to replace the UIM to LIM gasket, but will take a little more work to replace the LIM to engine gasket. Then again, I've never done it on a turbo, so what do I know?

lol definately not a 4 hour job, maybe if you take a 3 hour lunch break. If I were you, I would put some rtv on it like wayne said. Only try to do it, by removing the UIM.

4 hour job?! I had the TMIC/all manifolds/turbo/exhaust off on my friends car in about 2 hours! And that was with never having done it before and having to get the damn heatshields off.

Whoever told you a 4 hour job is trying to rip you off!

I guess I MIGHT understand the 4 hour job a tiny bit more if they're talking about the LIM to block gasket, but still like I said, I had all that **** off in 2 hrs flat.

do this job your self its easy and changing the oil or plugs. just remember to put the nut and bolts in there own bags or put them back where they belong as you take everything out if you think you will have a mix up with these. but 4 hours and $375 they saw you coming lol.. got to pepboys and pick up a manual theres even pics in there you can follow.

If it is the LIM (right next to the block), use red or copper RTV. It'll take the heat better once cured

if you can take off the lower intake on a stock T2 in 30 mins i want a video or see it in person and it would have to be able to bolt back together without any welding...

sorry if i am being abrasive but i see alot of people claiming things that really have nothing helpful in the post, a helpful post would be describing the job since he has no experience doing it.

it bugs me when i see someone asking how to pull an engine and i see someone claim they have pulled out their T2 engine in 20 minutes. how does it help the person seeking help and advice? on top of it the claims are usually unsubstantiated (ie. stripped blocks not a stock one).

i would post something comprehensive on the subject but i have to finish building an engine right now and just stopped by.

At this point, I'm worried more about you actually getting to the leak (if it's on the lower part of the LIM) with the RTV than about it actually working...

If in doubt, what the heck, tear her down. Call J-Rat over and offer him a beer, and you'll have it done in 15 minutes

Just pull the manifolds, it would be a LOT easier job if you have a stripped engine bay like myself and other forum members have, but you can still do it in a day easily.

Unbolt the intercooler, remove 1 bolt and 4 nuts from the UIM, cut all of the vac lines underneath the UIM to aid in it's quick removal, disconnect the brake booster vac line and the TPS and Air Temp wiring harness, remove coolant lines from TB, pull off the UIM.. Unbolt your DP, remove the heatshields from the turbo. Remove the Turbo, manifold and heatshields, remove the LIM.. You're going to need gaskets for the UIM, LIM, Manifold to Turbo, Manifold to engine, and O-rings for the LIM along with vac line (since it's much faster to cut it when removing the UIM for the first time than tring to remove it).

Maybe next time I will signal my humor with an AIR HORN or something to let you know that I was being SARCASTIC.

I will tell you this, it can be done in a HELL of alot less time then 4 hours. Stock or not, accessing the LIM isnt that hard.

And for that matter, why should I post a friggin step by step on this? I had to learn it by using something called a MANUAL! I knew this place was going to hell when a step by step was made for removing the damn ALTERNATOR! 90% of the time, people post on how to do stuff because they are too DAMN LAZY to figure it out for themselves. You want to make a step by step for R squaring the cigarette lighter, GO FOR IT CHAMP!

Okay, in order to be fair to tjeter, because he caught the rant that should have been directed at Karack, I will try to get up a writeup done on this.. It is a tad bit more complicated for someone thats new to cars..

AND DO NOT CUT ANY VACUUM LINES! I CAUTION AGAINS THIS !!!!

Why not? They're old as dirt anyway, need to be replaced, and speed the process up greatly..
