Well are you talking about a cold air kit that goes into the fender well? or the short ram intake with a custom cold air box built around it?

I havent personally heard of any issue from the intake kits themselves, if anything most problems usually spawn from leaks or install errors.

get a decent cone filter and AFM adapter. slap it together and throw a breather filter on the air pump. done.

stock intake doesnt flow quiete as well as a solid pipe i suppose, but it has all the proper air lines on it and rubber insulates heat much better then alluminum. alluminum heat soaks pretty easily.

what i did for a cold air shield is i cut up an old styrofoam cooler into "custom sized pieces" and covered them with heat resitant wrap. i work in a pharmacy and we get shipments of insulin etc in styrofoam coolors and heat wrap. if its good enough for medical uses im sure it lowers the intake tempurature a few degrees. you can tell a difference when you pop the hood after driving for a while and compare the intake box to the rest of the engine.

take some 2"? flex pipe and run it through the washer fluid hole if you removed it.

not really the front piece of the intake is missing, it's not so much about the cold air as it is about more air flow and if it will cause problems.

Most people have zero problems. The few that do obviously had soething else wrong or did something wrong.

There is nothing "short" or "ram" a bout putting a pod filter where the airbox went. Where do these dumb names come from?

I'll bet you there's no difference at all. The stock intake duct is massive for the engine's power (as is the TB), so there'll be nothing to gain from replacing it except maybe some bling.
