Instrument cluster says car is in neutral

Hello everyone, I have an Auto 1991 Rx7 and ive been having an issue with the instrument cluster saying that the car is in neutral but i am able to move the shifter and go into drive and reverse. Also the engine revs but my accelerations is slow, it sometimes caps 20 mph while driving. I did check my transmission fluid and is still full and light pink. Any suggestions as to what is causing the problem? Thank you in advance.

Sorry that no one responded yet...

But I have an 89 vert with the horrible automatic tranny.

It happens to me as well. My solution is to either manual swap it or what I do is.... Shift it back to neutral and back to drive a couple of times and it ends up working for me.

The trannies are so old it's not worth repairing.

For me though, the shifter light on the dash sometimes never lights up when this happens. I'll shift from park and it won't light up drive, so I shift back to neutral and then to drive and it will light up.

My personal guess would be a bad ground or bad sensor for whatever senses what gear the trans is in. Just my uninformed two cents
