Question Installing pilot bearing

I am trying to install the pilot bearing on my GXL, but something is not allowing me to tap it into place. Is it possible that the seal is wedged in therre somehow? I took some pictures, so if anyone could tell me it would be appreciated. I did not remove a seal when I removed the bearing itself. I thought nothing of it because when I did my base model a while back the person that changed the clutch did not put a seal in it. Pictures below...

dude... the outer race for the old pilot bearing is still in there... I,ve had that happen twice, both times got it out by chiseling it with a nery small punch that was ground down to a chisel point. I'ts a PITA, just be careful you don't chisel into the E-shaft ID.

If you have a pilot bearing tool its a piece of cake to take out. You'll get it out in less than 2 mins.

Yup, outer race still in there. Happens a lot. The puller, if not positioned correctly, will just pull in inner race and the bearings out. If you have a tool, you may be able to expand it to grab behind the race and pull it out. With my tool, I didn't have a problem. Put it in there and afetr a few tries, the race came out.

Okay, I went back and got the pilot bearing tool and slide hammer. I have tried for an hour now to get the rest of the bearing out. I am now cold, wet, and frustrated... it still is in there. What can I do now?

I feel your pain- chisel trick was the only thing that worked for me- if you have a small dremel tool, try that- just be careful of the e-shaft

agreed

Take a dremal with a cutting disc. Make a spiral cut from front to back then pull it out just be very careful not to cut to deep.

Wayne's right, that's about the only way to get it out. Regular pullers won't reach in far enough to get to the back off the race before hitting the e-shaft inner diameter. Cut it off and try to be at least somewhat carefull with it. Only cut one side too, it will relieve enough tension to come out pretty easily then. Good luck.

How in the world do you get a Dremel cutting disc in there to cut it? I have the standard and fiberglass impregnated type and both are too large to get into the hole let alone move around to cut the race.

O.K., do you have a small punch (small tip on the end)?

ok, I know this works, cause I've done it on a first gen & my sec gen- the punch needs to be small, but not so small it'll break easily. grind or sand down the tip of the punch to form a chisel shape. start at the 6 o'clock position of the outer race, hold the punch horizontal but try to hammer it between the race & the e-shaft. the race is VERY hard steel, you'll notice it tends to break rather than bend. it takes awhile, but keep at it until your basically removing the bent/broken steel pieces to the point you can grab that sucker & yank it outta there. clean up any scratches you might have made on the e-shaft with some emory cloth/ 600 grit, etc, so the new pilot bearing won't have any trouble goin back in...hope this helps..(when you install the pilot bearing, don't seat it so far back that you'll have a hard time getting it out w/ a puller next time)....

I took a used one that was worn down 1/3 of the way or so. Just use it on some scrap to wear it down to a useable size.
